Gaborik's trick leads Team Chara to All-Star win (AP)

OTTAWA ? Marian Gaborik made New York Rangers teammate Henrik Lundqvist pay for not selecting him to play for Daniel Alfredsson's team in the NHL All-Star game.

Gaborik beat Lundqvist twice in the first period, finished with three goals and an assist, and earned MVP honors in leading Team Chara to a 12-9 win over Team Alfredsson on Sunday.

Tim Thomas made 18 saves in the final period, and extended his record by winning his fourth All-Star game.

Chara, with the eventual winning goal, Marian Hossa and Corey Perry broke the game open by scoring three times in a span of 1:22 that put their club ahead 11-8 with 6:34 remaining.

Despite the loss, Alfredsson rewarded his hometown fans by leading his team with two goals and an assist. The Senators captain also hinted afterward that he is considering coming back for one more season.

In an interview broadcast on the arena's scoreboard, Alfredsson was asked about his future.

With a smile on his face, and fans cheering his name, Alfredsson said: "Fifty percent yes, and my wife's going to have to decide the other 50."

Henrik Sedin had a goal and two assists for Team Alfredsson.

Gaborik became the 16th player to score at least three goals ? one short of matching the record ? in the All-Star game, and first since Rick Nash had three in 2008.

The outcome was decided in the final period, in which Team Chara outscored Team Alfredsson 6-3.

Hossa broke an 8-8 tie by scoring on a partial breakaway after being set up by Pavel Datsyuk with 7:56 left. Settling the puck, Hossa stopped in front and then backhanded a shot past Brian Elliott.

Chara gave his club a 10-8 lead when Gaborik fed him a perfect pass into the middle for a snap shot past Elliott.

For Team Chara, Hossa and Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists, and Joffrey Lupul scored twice.

Daniel Sedin, John Tavares, Jason Pominville and Milan Michalek had a goal and assist each for Team Alfredsson.

Team Chara got off to a fast start, building a 3-0 lead on Gaborik's second goal 9:51 in. The club was so dominant that it was leading 2-0 before Alfredsson's team got off its first shot.

Gaborik certainly enjoyed getting the best of Lundqvist. After scoring his first goal on a give-and-go with Datsyuk, Gaborik circled the net dropped to one knee and pointed his stick at Lundqvist while pumping his fist.

Lundqvist jokingly lamented about being beaten three times on eight shots, including twice by his Rangers teammate.

"There's been a lot of trash talk, but it feels like it's game over already," said Lundqvist, who was wearing a microphone during the opening period.

Lundqvist was Alfredsson's assistant captain, and had a hand in the team's drafting philosophy on Thursday.

Team Alfredsson rallied to tie the game at 3 before the first period was over. But they didn't get their first ? and only lead ? until Alfredsson scored twice during a 1:31 span to put his team up 6-5 with just under four minutes left in the second.

His first goal came on a great individual effort in which Alfredsson, dragging the puck behind him, split defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Ryan Suter, and flipped a shot that sneaked inside the right post to beat goalie Carey Price.

Alfredsson's second goal came on a wonderful passing play courtesy of Daniel and Henrik Sedin, whom Alfredsson was looking forward to play with when he drafted the twins. Henrik Sedin drove up the left wing, fed a pass through the crease to his twin brother, who then redirected to the high slot, where Alfredsson slapped it home.

Price allowed three goals on 14 shots, and had lamented the All-Star game's lack of defense during the first intermission.

"I feel like being a lamb getting led to slaughter," Price said. "I'm must be holding on for the ride today and hope I don't get lit up too bad."

The game was missing the NHL's most high-profile stars in Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. Crosby has been limited to playing just eight games this season as a result of a concussion, and has also been diagnosed with a neck injury, making it unclear when or if he will play at all this season.

Ovechkin backed out last week after the NHL suspended him three games for an illegal hit.

The game featured 17 first-time All-Stars, 10 playing on Team Alfredsson. Team Chara's roster had the edge over Team Alfredsson in combined games played (10,227-8,425, not including goalies), career goals (2,850-2,286) and career points (7,394-6,164).

Steven Stamkos was awarded a penalty shot with 3:27 left in the first period after he was tripped up by Dion Phaneuf.

On the penalty shot, Stamkos ? who leads the NHL with 32 goals ? attempted the same spin-around move he used to beat Price in the skills competition on Saturday night. Howard didn't bite on Sunday, holding his ground and hugging the post to stop Stamkos' attempt.

It was the second penalty shot taken in an All-Star game. The other was last year in at Raleigh, N.C., when Colorado's Matt Duchene was stopped by Lundqvist.

Fire badly damages 19th century church in Ukraine (AP)

KIEV, Ukraine ? Emergency officials say a fire has badly damaged a 19th-century Orthodox church in southern Ukraine, including collapsing its dome.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire at the landmark Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in the town of Bolhrad outside the Black Sea port of Odessa broke out Thursday during renovation work, the Emergency Situations Ministry said on its website.

The church's dome collapsed before the fire was put out.

Officials say the fire could have been caused by a violation of safety rules during the renovation.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt banned at least 10 Americans and Europeans from leaving the country, including the son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, hiking tensions with Washington over a campaign by Egypt's military against groups promoting democracy and human rights.

The United States warned Thursday that the campaign raised concerns about Egypt's transition to democracy and could jeopardize American aid that Egypt's battered economy needs badly after a year of unrest.

The travel ban was part of an Egyptian criminal investigation into foreign-funded democracy organizations after soldiers raided the offices of 10 such groups last month, including those of two American groups.

The investigation is closely intertwined with Egypt's political turmoil since the fall of Hosni Mubarak nearly a year ago. The generals who took power have accused "foreign hands" of being behind protests against their rule and they frequently depict the protesters themselves as receiving foreign funds in a plot to destabilize the country.

Egyptian opponents of the military say the generals are trying to smear the protesters in the eyes of the public and silence organizations they fear will undermine their managing of the country.

Also startling is the military's willingness to clash with its longtime top ally, the United States, over the issue, particularly since the army itself receives more than $1 billion a year from Washington. The December raids brought sharp U.S. criticism, and last week President Barack Obama spoke by telephone with Egyptian military chief Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi to emphasize "the role that these organizations can play in civil society," according to State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland on Thursday.

The ban became public after Sam LaHood, Egypt director of the Washington-based International Republican Institute, went to Cairo's airport Saturday to catch a flight and was told by an immigration official that he couldn't leave.

"I asked her why I was denied, she said she didn't know. I asked how to fix it, and she said she didn't know," said LaHood, 36. An hour later, a man in civilian clothes gave him back his passport and escorted him to the curb, LaHood said.

"It's a dark signal for groups who are interested in doing this kind of work," he said.

LaHood's father, a former congressman from Illinois, is the only Republican in Obama's Cabinet. The elder LaHood declined to comment.

The IRI was among the groups raided last month, along with the National Democratic Institute and a number of Egyptian organizations. Both American groups, linked to the political parties of the same name, monitored Egypt's recent parliamentary elections. In the raids, troops ransacked 17 offices of the 10 organizations around the country, carting away computers and documents.

The Egyptian government said the raids were part of a legitimate investigation into whether the groups were operating legally.

Sen. John McCain blasted Egypt's handling of the issue Thursday, warning that continued restrictions on civil society groups "could set back the long-standing partnership between the United States and Egypt."

IRI and NDI officials said they have been trying since 2005 to register as required by law, but were left in legal limbo, never officially denied nor granted permission. Both groups continued to operate while keeping authorities abreast of their activities, they said. Many Egyptian non-governmental organizations say officials often keep their groups in such limbo to maintain a threat over their heads.

Sam LaHood said he was told by his lawyer that he is under investigation on suspicion of managing an unregistered NGO and receiving "funds" from an unregistered NGO, namely, his salary.

Two other Americans and a European with IRI have also been banned from travel, Lahood said his lawyer had been told. From the National Democratic Institute, three Americans and three Serb employees are also on the list, according to its Egypt director Lisa Hughes.

Hughes, who is among those barred, said she has been interrogated for more than four hours about her group's work and that she had planned to fly to the U.S. next month before she heard about the ban.

"I think we would be silly not to be concerned," she said. "We were concerned the moment armed men showed up at our office door, and this has done nothing to calm those concerns."

The State Department's top human rights official, Michael Posner, told reporters in Cairo Thursday that such moves could jeopardize U.S. aid to Egypt, one of the biggest recipients.

"All need to have the ability to operate openly, freely, without constraint, not based on the content of their work," he said.

Posner pointed to recent U.S. legislation that blocks annual aid to Egypt unless it takes certain steps. These include abiding by its 1979 peace treaty with Israel, holding free and fair elections and "implementing policies to protect freedom of expression, association and religion and due process of law."

"Obviously, any action that creates tension between our governments makes the whole package more difficult," Posner said.

The U.S. is due to give $1.3 billion in military assistance and $250 million in economic aid to Egypt in 2012. Washington has given Egypt an average of $2 billion in economic and military aid a year since 1979, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Egypt's military has been locked in a confrontation for months with protesters who demand it immediately hand over power to civilians.

Hundreds of protesters camped Thursday in Cairo's central Tahrir Square, a day after several hundred thousand people massed there to mark the one-year anniversary of the 18-day anti-Mubarak uprising.

Thursday evening, hundreds moved from Tahrir and rallied in front of the state TV building, beating drums as they chanted for the "liberation" of state-run media from the military's control. They projected video footage of soldiers beating protesters onto the building.

State TV has been a mouthpiece of the military, broadcasting its accusations against protesters. Activists demand it be restructured as an independent media institution.

"The media is still manipulated and projects the same lies," said protester Mahmoud Ragab. "We will be here everyday to let them know it is a revolution."

Stocks open up on Fed, earnings, data (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Wall Street rose modestly on Thursday on a combination of an extended easy monetary policy from the Federal Reserve, strong earnings from Caterpillar Inc and 3M Corp, as well as solid U.S. economic data.

The Fed's statement on Wednesday that it would keep interest rates near zero at least until the end of 2014 lifted stocks and commodities globally as investors bet more money would be driven into risk assets. European stock indexes gained, crude oil futures rose sharply, and copper advanced for a second day.

New orders for U.S. manufactured goods rose more than expected in December, while underlying trends continued to point to improving labor market conditions even as new U.S. claims for unemployment benefits rose last week.

"It's a combo package," said Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer at Wells Capital Management. "It's certainly being bolstered here by a few not only good earnings reports but some blowouts ... the underlying tone is this constant stream of better-than-expected economic reports."

Caterpillar Inc's (CAT.N) jump in quarterly earnings far exceeded Wall Street expectations on Thursday as it reported increased global demand for construction machinery and mining equipment. The stock rose 3 percent to $112.27.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) gained 47.49 points, or 0.37 percent, to 12,804.45. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) rose 3.58 points, or 0.27 percent, to 1,329.64. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) added 7.99 points, or 0.28 percent, to 2,826.30.

The Fed's move comes at a busy period during U.S. earnings season. By Wednesday 57 percent of companies have beat analysts' forecasts compared to 70 percent in past quarters at a comparable stage in the earnings season.

Greece was still a wildcard for markets as its leaders resumed tortuous negotiations on a debt swap with private creditors in Athens on Thursday. All eyes on the European Central Bank after International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde said public-sector holders of Greek debt may also need to take losses.

3M Co (MMM.N), a conglomerate with operations throughout the economy, reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings on Thursday as demand from industrial and transport markets offset weak sales to makers of consumer electronics. The shares rose 1 percent to $87.38.

The S&P 500 is up more than 23 percent from lows in October as investors welcome signs that the U.S. economy is improving and credit conditions in Europe are easing after the bloc's central bank moved to boost liquidity in the financial system.

AT&T Inc (T.N) posted a massive, $6.7 billion quarterly loss on a break-up fee for its failed T-Mobile USA merger and a pension-related charge on top of costly subsidies for smartphones. The shares fell 1 percent to $29.90.

Amgen Inc (AMGN.O), the world's largest biotechnology company, said it would pay more than $1 billion to buy Micromet Inc (MITI.O), a deal that would give it access to the company's novel cancer treatment technology.

Micromet's shares jumped 32 percent to $10.92 and were the most heavily traded on Nasdaq.

Muslims call for NYPD chief to resign over movie (AP)

NEW YORK ? Muslim groups are calling for New York's police commissioner to step down because of his appearance in a film they say puts their religion and its adherents in a bad light.

About 20 activists held a news conference on the steps of City Hall on Thursday and criticized Ray Kelly for giving an interview to the producers of the movie "The Third Jihad."

The movie uses dramatic footage to warn against the dangers of radical Islam and shariah, or Islamic law. Muslim groups say it encourages Americans to be suspicious of all Muslims.

"Terrorism is an evil that must be eliminated, but one cannot fight wrong with wrong," said Talib Abdur-Rashid, a Muslim cleric.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday he stood by Kelly and the commissioner's spokesman, Paul Browne. Activists had also demanded Browne's resignation.

However, the mayor said Kelly would have to redouble his outreach efforts to Muslims.

"Anything like this doesn't help credibility, so Ray's got to work at establishing, re-establishing or reinforcing the credibility that he does have," Bloomberg said.

Kelly appears for about 30 seconds of the 72-minute movie, which was made by the conservative Clarion Fund. He originally said he was not involved but on Wednesday acknowledged he had given a 90-minute interview to the filmmakers in 2007.

Browne he had initially forgotten details of Kelly's involvement in the film until asked about it again this week.

"This goes back five years," he said. "There's some suggestion that, `Gee, I suddenly remembered.' I didn't suddenly remember ? I went through five years of emails to try and figure out did I get request by this guy who's connected with the foundation."

The movie was later shown to police trainees. The police department said it was played in a continuous loop in the sign-in area of counterterrorism training sessions between October and December 2010. As many as 1,489 trainees may have seen the movie, according to documents released under New York's public records law.

Kelly apologized Wednesday for his appearance and for the playing of the movie.

The Clarion Fund and its supporters say "The Third Jihad" is balanced.

"I don't see why they're so upset by people seeing it," said Stuart Kaufman of The United West, a group that opposes shariah. "Shariah law is a danger to western civilization and it's up to police to understand the nature of Shariah law so they can prevent this."

The Muslim leaders said they are worried that the police department is teaching officers to treat all Muslims as suspects. They demanded the resignation of Kelly and Browne, and a U.S. Department of Justice inquiry into the showing of the film.

The activists also want retraining of all 1,489 officers "that are walking this city with poison in their brains," said Cyrus McGoldrick, civil rights director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations-New York. CAIR is one of the organizations that "The Third Jihad" accuses of being soft on terrorist groups.

Bloomberg said he doubted the movie had swayed any of the trainees and said he saw no need for retraining.

"I think any retraining is probably being done by the press right now," Bloomberg said.

Kelly has said the department does surveillance only when it is following leads. But an investigation by The Associated Press has revealed a secret intelligence program, set up with the aid of the Central Intelligence Agency, aimed at infiltrating religious groups and monitoring neighborhoods even when there is no evidence of wrongdoing.

The CIA has since decided to pull its officer from the NYPD after an internal investigation criticized poor oversight of the collaboration.

With the exception of owner Jeffrey Lurie explaining that, if he didn?t expect the team to be better in 2012, he would have made a coaching change, Eagles management has been conspicuously quiet in the early stages of the offseason.? Eagles G.M. Howie Roseman has broken the silence.? Not surprisingly, he says that the team will be better in 2012.

Roseman spoke with Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com on Tuesday, from the Senior Bowl.? ?We were 8-8, and we have work to do,? Roseman said.? ?We?ve got to look at everything we?re doing and make sure we evaluate it honestly and learn from our mistakes.? We?ll study everything around the league, the way everybody else does things, and we?ll get better.

?I?m not going to sit here in a bubble and say, ?We?re so great.?? When we look back, there are things we wish we had done better.? I can get better, we all can get better.?

If Roseman were to say, ?We?re so great,? the bubble in which he would be sitting would be one of delusion and/or drunkenness.? Though the four-game winning streak to end the season is encouraging, the Eagles failed miserably in 2011, especially given the standards they not only established but embraced.? On PFT Live, Eagles president Joe Banner declared that the line between success and failure wasn?t making the playoffs but winning the Super Bowl.

?Obviously, when we?re sitting here at the Senior Bowl and not the Super Bowl, it?s not where you want to be,? Roseman said.? ?So we have to get better, and we?ll look at every facet of the team and every avenue possible to improve and make sure next year is different.?

Roseman, like Lurie, believes that will happen.? ?It always starts with your head coach and quarterback, and we are so fortunate to have Andy Reid and Michael Vick in those spots, and we feel like that gives us a chance,? Roseman said. ?We need to get better, but I do feel like we have good players, and in the next few months, we?ll have the opportunity to upgrade in all the areas we feel like we need to.

?There?s a lot of optimism here.? Everybody in the building is very excited about where we are.?

Eagles fans understandably are more guarded.? They all got excited last year, and they suffered a major letdown.? If there?s another letdown in 2012, the excitement next year could come from a new head coach, and possibly a new G.M.

Woman says US Airways lost husband's ashes

A Pennsylvania widow is on a mission to find her husband's cremated remains after she says his urn disappeared from her checked luggage. WCAU-TV's Byron Scott reports.

"He was a great guy -- he doesn't deserve this," O'Grady said.?

On Nov. 1 she was on her way to England to scatter Brian's ashes in his hometown of Hull when the airline lost her husband?s remains, she says.?

O'Grady says Transportation Security Administration officials who told her that she could not take her husband?s ashes, which were in a box, through airport security. Directed to go back to the US Airways counter, O?Grady put the ashes into her checked luggage and had a "Fragile" sticker put on the suitcase, she told NBC Philadelphia.?

She got off the plane and drove to her sister-in-law's home in her husband's hometown.?

"When I opened the baggage and everything the ashes weren't there," O'Grady said.?

The Trumbauersville, Pa. woman says she contacted US Air and her son sent e-mails, but to no avail.?

"We're no further along than the day I discovered they were missing on the second of November," O'Grady said.?

According to e-mails provided by O'Grady's son, the airline received the correspondence and assigned the incident a case number. But the remains were still missing nearly three months after the family says they were lost and they were looking for closure.?

"My kids, everybody's upset and yet US Air just blows us off," said O'Grady.?

Lady Gaga in duet with ... Harvard? (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Pop culture and higher education are once again merging -- and hopefully this time it will go better than Snooki's ill-conceived visit to Rutgers.

Lady Gaga is teaming up with Harvard University to form the Born This Way Foundation, a non-profit, charitable organization.

Its purpose: to "explore the best ways to reach youth and create a new culture of kindness, bravery, acceptance and empowerment" with a focus on issues such as "self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and advocacy," according to a Harvard release.

The foundation -- which is named after the singer's most recent album and is a collaboration between Gaga, the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the California Endowment, Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society and the Harvard Graduate School of Education -- will officially launch with a February 29 event at Harvard's Sanders Theatre. The singer and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, will be on hand for the reveal.

"My daughter's foundation was born out of her passion to create a better world where people are kinder and nicer to one another and are accepted for who they are, regardless of how different they may be," Cynthia Germanotta said of the new organization.

"She has experienced many of the struggles that our youth encounter today, and identifies with the lasting effects they can have without proper support. Together, we look forward to creating a new movement that will engage and empower youth and accept them as valuable members of our society."

Gaga, a frequent champion of gay rights, was honored earlier this week with a GLAAD Media Awards nomination, in the Outstanding Music Artist category.

Family Finance: Claiming those who depend on you | The ...

Is your unemployed college graduate "occupying" your couch? Has your elderly parent moved in with you, or are you paying for an assisted living facility?
If so, these issues likely have stirred up a host of emotional and financial issues in your home. They may also impact your taxes.
"We see this more and more," said John Steffee, a partner at the accounting firm Pfister and Rompalo, in Wormleysburg, Pa. With the economy continuing to sputter, adult children frequently can't find jobs, and older parents are having trouble keeping up with their homes. "And all of a sudden, they have grandma and grandpa, mom and dad and the kids under one roof. Just like the Waltons."
Most households bear little resemblance to that wholesome television brood of the 1970s, but data confirm Steffee's impressions. A review of census data by the Pew Research Center last year found that by 2009 about 7 million households in the U.S. consisted of two adult generations, and another 4.2 million households had three generations living under one roof.
Kristine and Kevin Tanzillo brought her mother, Nancy Haugen, to live in their Myrtle Springs, Texas, home about five years ago because she needed near constant care after spinal surgery.
Haugen, 73, receives Social Security and a small pension, but together they make for a "pretty meager" income, her daughter said. Although the Tanzillos paid Haugen's mortgage and other living expenses before she moved in, it was only when they began sharing a home that the couple started claiming Haugen as a dependent.
That will be a $3,700 deduction on their 2011 tax return.
Just sharing living quarters isn't enough to qualify someone as your dependent, so it's important to make sure they meet the support test laid out by the Internal Revenue Service.
For someone to qualify as a dependent, the taxpayer must provide more than 50 percent of the person's annual support ? including housing, food and medical care. For someone sharing a home, the total support figure would include the market value of the space the parent is living in, Steffee said ? for example, the cost of renting a comparable room or apartment.
The dependent's total support figure is based on an annual tally, so it doesn't matter how many days or months you contributed. That means Social Security and other government benefits must be counted toward that support, along with pensions and any personal savings. In addition, the individual must not have earned more than $3,700 in 2011, or about $310 per month, outside of government benefits.
Haugen didn't have to live with the Tanzillos in order to be claimed as a dependent. Since they were paying the bulk of her living expenses in the years before they combined households, their accountant told them they would be able to make the claim.
But Kristine Tanzillo initially didn't feel comfortable. She said she worried about an audit, despite the reassurance from her accountant.
Also, at that time, her mother was still independent. "We didn't want to intrude on that," Tanzillo said.
The fist request for her mother's financial paperwork created a little friction, but now, it's just part of normal family business.
Andrew Schwartz, a certified public accountant in Woburn, Mass., said many of his clients claim parents as dependents. Most take the claim readily.
Another potential tax benefit may come from medical expenses. The IRS requires that family medical expenses exceed 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income before they are deductible, a difficult threshold for most families to meet. The additional costs for an older parent, especially one with serious health concerns, may lift costs to above that line.
Even if the family earns enough to have to pay the alternative minimum tax when filing their federal return ? usually those who earn between $150,000 and $650,000 per year ? Schwartz said claiming a parent as a dependent may help save on state or local income taxes.
Adult children who have returned to the nest may also be considered dependents in many cases. Like the older generation, the main issue is whether you are providing their support.
Parents may claim children living with them as dependents up to age 19 automatically. Full-time students may be claimed up to age 24.
But plenty of young adults are living with their parents after those cutoffs, largely because of the economy. The federal government pegs the unemployment rate for people 20 to 24 years old at 14.4 percent, much higher than the 8.5 percent overall rate.
Other relatives may also qualify as dependents if they live in the same home, and non-relatives may also squeeze in under certain conditions.
Most tax preparation software asks simple questions that can help a taxpayer determine who qualifies, but for complicated living arrangements it may be helpful to consult a professional tax preparer.
Steffee warned that there can be all kinds of hazards because the regulations are very specific. "You have to be really careful," he said. "And make sure you don't trip over the rules."

At least 9 die in Iran passenger boat sinking: IRNA (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Nine bodies have been recovered from a passenger vessel that sank off the Iranian coast with 22 people aboard, but five survivors have been rescued, the official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.

Rescue officials said they feared most of those on board had been trapped inside the boat when it capsized and sank in bad weather while sailing from the island of Hormuz to Bandar Abbas on Saturday evening.

IRNA reported that the boat had run out of fuel and was tossed about in heavy winds before capsizing. The strong wind also hampered the rescue effort, it said.

David Beckham considered offers from Paris, the Premiership and beyond. He decided nothing was better than his adopted home with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The English superstar formally returned to his MLS club Thursday with a new two-year contract, vowing to win more trophies with the Galaxy while preparing to own an MLS franchise when his career ends. He'll also be free to play at the Olympics if he's chosen for Britain's national squad.

After the excitement died down from the Galaxy's run to the league title last fall during Beckham's most impressive MLS season, the midfielder made his final decision to stay in Hollywood on New Year's Eve over a glass of wine with his wife, Victoria.

"We've been happy here for the last five years, and we felt, why change something that works?" Beckham asked a packed room at Staples Center. "Los Angeles has been amazing to us as a family, so we're going to continue to enjoy it. ... We knew the first day that we arrived here that it would be a place that we'd spend many years, and I wasn't wrong."

The Beckhams' four children are comfortable living in Southern California, and he felt his family's well-being outweighed the intrigue of bigger offers from unnamed Premiership clubs or Paris Saint-Germain, which aggressively courted him in recent weeks.

"At 36 years old, to still have the offers that were being thrown at me, you have to look at all options," Beckham said.

The bold experiment that began nearly five years ago has survived a rough start to become longer and more fruitful than nearly anybody expected when Beckham left Real Madrid and moved stateside, hoping to spread the world's most popular sport in a nation that has always resisted its lure.

While Beckham's move hasn't transformed the sport in North America, he's the biggest star and fan draw in MLS even after five seasons, and the Galaxy have been the league's best team for two years.

"I must admit that I've never come back after a season with the Galaxy having been a champion," Beckham said. "I wanted to have that feeling and enter back into that locker room a champion. And we are, but we're not finished. I'm not just happy with one championship. I want more."

His second contract with the Galaxy was greeted with nothing near the spectacle of his July 2007 arrival, when the club threw a huge party at Home Depot Center to herald the biggest contract in MLS history.

This time around, Beckham quietly met his usual media retinue at the downtown arena owned by AEG, the conglomerate that also owns the Galaxy. Beckham spends much of his free time in Los Angeles at Staples Center, where he watches Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers from a courtside seat ? sometimes even making it to games just a few hours after the Galaxy's matches.

"I've become a Lakers fan, so being able to come to the games is great," Beckham said. "There are so many things that we love."

Staples Center's owners are thrilled by the decision. AEG President Tim Leiweke said Beckham can play for the Galaxy for the rest of his career, if he chooses ? and when he's done, AEG will help Beckham with his desire to own a franchise.

"For however long as he decides to play, the question of where he plays is not a question," said Leiweke, whose company spent aggressively to assemble top talent around Beckham in the last two years. "Unless I'm mistaken, (ownership is) his future, once he decides to retire. We have structured that option in a way to allow David to become a partner in the league at some point in the near future and operate his own franchise."

Even Beckham might not have predicted this outcome just two years into his tenure with the Galaxy, when the failed tenure of coach Ruud Gullit and the franchise's general disarray prompted Beckham to twice go on loan to AC Milan, where he blew out his Achilles tendon in 2010.

Everything came together for Beckham in Los Angeles last year after he returned from injury and another training stint with Tottenham. He was among the league's best players all season long with the Galaxy, who picked up Irish striker Robbie Keane as they topped the MLS table for the second straight season and steamrolled through the playoffs to the title.

Beckham's assist set up Landon Donovan's winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Houston in the MLS Cup on Nov. 20. Beckham celebrated the championship with his three sons on the Galaxy's home field before saying he planned to debate his future over the holidays.

Beckham claimed he would consider staying with the Galaxy, yet many fans and observers in Europe didn't believe him. Given his revitalized form with the Galaxy, many assumed he would take one of the offers sure to be dangled in front of him to resume his European career.

"I was always optimistic, because I felt he was really comfortable with the team and just happy," said coach Bruce Arena, whose steady influence has been praised by Beckham. "We literally were working all the way through the year to get David back."

Language barriers, overwhelmed local authorities, squads of foreign diplomats with lists of awkward questions ? the international mix of passengers and crew aboard the stricken Costa Concordia cruise liner added to the complications Saturday for Italian officials handling the emergency.

Local authorities were fielding inquiries from dozens of nations worried about the 4,234 people who were aboard the ship when it ran aground and tipped over off the coast of Italy, including Italians, Germans, French, Britons and Americans, and about 1,000 crew members from across the globe.

As international travel has grown easier, aid agencies and lawmakers alike have frequently warned of the potential for confusion in the wake of international emergencies, as sometimes competing nations or international organizations arrive at a disaster site.

In Italy, a host of countries sent diplomatic staff to the scene as three bodies were recovered from the sea off the tiny island of Giglio, close to the coast of Tuscany.

British ambassador Christopher Prentice said he had seen his counterparts from Germany and Spain at local hospitals, where diplomats were checking identities and tallying numbers of those injured.

Officials from the U.K. and Australia set up a joint base at Porto Santo Stefano middle school, which had been transformed into a temporary holding center for rescued passengers.

Though the school was a scene of chaos as passengers tried to find buses to take them back to Rome or the coastal town of Savona and embassy officials cross-referenced ship logs and passenger lists, Prentice said nations were cooperating well.

"This is obviously a very serious and major incident. My impression at this stage is that the Italian authorities have responded excellently and our cooperation with them has been very good," Prentice said, as he offered advice to Britons at the school.

Other embassies sent lower-level officials to work with the ship operator Costa and local authorities, offering help to foreign passengers who didn't speak Italian and were struggling to understand the response to the accident or how to get home.

Consular officials wore bright green or orange emergency vests to identify themselves to their co-nationals, offering help in how to obtain emergency passports, since many non-Europeans had to turn them in to cruise officials upon boarding.

Prentice said that in a still unfolding crisis scenario, good coordination was key. "It is about cooperation, and things are being done here very calmly and sensibly, I've been impressed by the effort of the Italian authorities," he said.

As nations were still attempting to confirm the identities of passengers who had been rescued from the ship, rescuers focused on several dozen people still unaccounted for.

Monty Mathisen, of the New York-based publication Cruise Industry News, said Costa would be well prepared to handle the demands of countries searching for news of the passengers and crew.

"They are well set up to deal with those kind of issues," said Mathisen. "The cruise industry is one of most regulated industries."

Marcus Oxley, then disaster management director of the relief charity Tearfund told a committee of British lawmakers in 2006 of the nightmare confronting local authorities as organizations descend on an area requesting information, or offering help.

"In the white hot heat of an emergency, these things are extraordinarily difficult to do," he said.

After encampment ends, NYC Occupiers become nomads (AP)

NEW YORK ? It was only a few nights after the Occupy protesters began sleeping in his church sanctuary when the Rev. Bob Brashear realized that his laptop was missing.

The refugees from Manhattan's Zuccotti Park had found their way to his cavernous Presbyterian church on a cold winter evening, hoping to stay for a few nights, maybe longer. It was the latest stopover for the nomadic group, which has been living in a rotating series of churches since the city shut down its camp in November.

"There was a sense of shock and sadness that it had happened," said Brashear, whose laptop will soon be replaced by Occupy organizers. "And there's a common understanding that if there's one more theft in the church, that's it."

This is what the Occupy encampment has become: a band of homeless protesters with no place to go. Amid accusations of drug use and sporadic theft, they've been sleeping on church pews for weeks, consuming at least $20,000 of the donations that Occupy Wall Street still has in its coffers. Their existence is being hotly debated at Occupy meetings: Are these people truly "Occupiers" who deserve free food and a roof over their heads?

"We don't do this out of charity," said 34-year-old Ravi Ahmad, who works for Columbia University and volunteers with Occupy in her spare time. "We do this so that whoever wants to work in the movement can work in the movement. This is a meritocracy."

But money is draining rapidly from Occupy's various bank accounts, which currently amount to about $344,000. Including church maintenance costs and meals, living expenses are more than $2,000 per week.

"We are all aware that the NYPD destroyed the tent homes of many Occupiers in just one night," someone recently wrote on http://www.nycga.net, Occupy's General Assembly website for New York City. "However, where were they living before Zuccotti Park? Are we paying for housing for homeless people who may be relocated to City shelters?"

The movement, which denounces corporate excess and economic inequality, has been fighting to stay afloat in the city where it began. Media attention and donations have dropped off. And although protesters regularly meet to plan demonstrations, recent marches have had none of the spectacle that captivated New Yorkers and watchers worldwide.

On Monday, the metal barricades surrounding Zuccotti Park were removed for the first time since the November raid. But protesters still can't set up tents to camp overnight ? and they don't have a long-term solution to the housing problem.

Their current home is Brashear's West-Park Presbyterian Church, a stately 100-year-old house of worship on the Upper West Side that badly needs renovation. Occupy organizers see the cracks in the ceiling as an opportunity to repay the favor by helping to fix the place up.

There are about 70 Occupiers staying there and another 30 or so at Park Slope United Methodist Church in Brooklyn.

"Everybody tries to get along, make things work," said Donna Marinelli, 52, of New Britain, Conn., who was sitting on the floor in a sleeping bag alongside her cousin, David Monarca. "We were in the park in tents until they raided us. We wanted to stay for the movement. We didn't want to leave when we just got here."

During the daylight hours, Marinelli attends Occupy events and volunteers at an Occupy kitchen in Brooklyn. Nobody is allowed to stay in the church during the day. At night, the place is patrolled by an Occupy security team led by Marine Corps Sgt. Halo Showzah, a 27-year-old Iraq war veteran from the Bronx.

"We walk around the church with flashlights, making noise to wake these people up and making sure they're good," he said. "No sex in the church, no drinking, no smoking, no shooting, no sniffing."

The church was quiet and cozy Wednesday night as about two dozen people staked out their respective corners of the room. Some prefer the balcony; others like to curl up by the door. Someone fiddled around on the piano and sang a few songs as a cat watched from a pew. Showzah wandered around and chatted with everyone, making jokes and doling out advice to the singer.

The security threat is very real here. At least 30 percent of the crowd is a mix of chronically homeless, drug-addicted people, some of whom suffer from "psychological issues," as several protesters put it. Among other rules, the pastor has demanded that the Occupiers station at least one mental health expert "within easy reach" of the church every night.

Even some of the church dwellers themselves are fed up with their fellow pew mates. Chris Allen, 36, is working on a backup plan in case they get kicked out.

"I feel people are messing up the church and we're not going to have it much longer, so I'm worried about putting money in my pocket," said Allen, an unemployed construction worker from Long Island who lives here with his wife. "Because when it snows and I have nowhere to go, I'm not going to be stuck on the streets like everyone else for being idiots."

Who is allowed to stay at the church is a source of contention and perpetual infighting. If you're not on the official list kept by Occupy organizers, you're not allowed inside. But it's unclear what distinguishes the general populace from an Occupier.

One night in December, police officers were called to the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew when people who weren't on the list came to the door and refused to leave.

"I was turned away one night in the cold and rain," said David Everitt-Carlson, a 55-year-old unemployed former advertising executive who lived in a teepee at Zuccotti Park. "And I slept at Grand Central Station. I found a place behind a Christmas decoration."

About a month ago, a telephone hotline was set up so people could call and request a spot at one of the churches. But space is limited. And each church sojourn has an expiration date.

Some churches willingly opened their doors to provide temporary shelter after the police raid. None of them are equipped to house protesters forever.

"It's a lot of wear and tear on the space," said Michael Ellick, a minister at Judson Memorial Church, which housed protesters for several nights in November. "We're broke, so we don't have a custodial staff. We can't be a full-time housing unit."

During daylight hours, some people migrate down to Occupy's atrium at 60 Wall St., while others head off to hunt for jobs or disappear into the city. At night, there are often counselors on hand for emotional support.

Typical arguments are reminiscent of life at Zuccotti, which had its own share of criminal activity. A frequent complaint, for example, involves a man who apparently never takes showers.

"No fistfights, no weapons involved," said Jeff Brewer, 34, an Occupy organizer. "I believe there was a shampoo bottle that was thrown one time."

Meals are donations from food pantries and leftovers dropped off by nearby restaurants.

The debate over providing food and shelter for the church Occupiers plays into a larger one that has divided New York's protesters ever since the police raid. While some are determined to occupy another space somewhere in the city, others say an encampment is unnecessary and, at its worst, a burden.

The church dwellers believe they are carrying the torch for the lost encampment ? and that, someday, they will form the foundation of a new one.

"We really have been calling it the `Occupiers army' that we are building," explained protester Jason Harris, a teacher from Massachusetts.

First, though, they'll have to find a way to survive the winter. Brashear hasn't yet decided whether he will allow the protesters to stay at West-Park beyond next week. If they are truly dedicated to forming a community ? and not simply seeking shelter within the church's walls ? he'll be more willing to extend their unspoken lease.

"It's a sort of sink or swim situation," he said. "I think, long-term, they have to make a decision about what, exactly, their movement is about."
