Ooo! It's coming! What is? We don't know, but we're excited anyway. NVIDIA has a teaser up informing us that at 7:30 pm, Pacific time, on April 28th it will have something special to announce. The venue will be the GeForce LAN / NVIDIA Gaming Festival 2012 in Shanghai -- which leads us to believe there might be a GPU announcement in store for us. Though, we wouldn't write off a Tegra reveal entirely. So, which will it be? You'll just have to check back in Saturday to find out.

Report cites fracking-related activities as potential suspect in minor quakes

The rate of minor earthquakes from Colorado to Ohio has quickened in the past decade. But the report doesn't make a direct link between fracking and quakes, notes an Interior official.

Federal research scientists are linking the deep underground injection of waste water from oil and gas exploration to a major increase in minor earthquakes from Colorado to Ohio.

A modest increase in such quakes was noticed beginning in 2001 in coal-bed methane fields near the Colorado-New Mexico border. That number accelerated rapidly from 2009 through 2011 and was especially pronounced in the oil and gas fields of northern Arkansas and central and southern Oklahoma, the scientists found.

Across that region, 50 earthquakes were larger than magnitude 3 in 2009. The number rose to 87 quakes in 2010 and reached 134 earthquakes in 2011 ? more than six times the annual average levels recorded from 1970 to 2000.

The large jump is "a remarkable increase" in the rate of minor earthquakes that is "almost certainly manmade," according to the abstract of a new study by US Geological Survey scientists, which is expected to be delivered at a scientific conference next week in San Diego. The full study was unavailable.

In Oklahoma, for instance, the rate of earthquakes larger than magnitude 3 (considered a minor quake) abruptly increased around 2009 ? rising from 1.2 per year over the past half century to more than 25 per year, the study found.

"A naturally-occurring rate change of this magnitude is unprecedented outside of volcanic settings or in the absence of a main shock, of which there were neither in this region," the study abstract notes.

Even though the higher frequency indicates that quakes are probably being induced by human activity, "it remains to be determined how they are related to either changes in extraction methodologies or the rate of oil and gas production," the abstract says.

In an interview with the online news service Energy Wire, lead study author William Ellsworth, a USGS scientist, called the increase that his team documented "very peculiar."

The soaring number of quakes overlaps with a huge jump in the amount of drilling for natural gas occurring in shale beds ? an approach called "fracking," which produces millions of gallons of waste water. While some fracking waste water is treated aboveground, much of it is injected into deep waste-water wells.

Is that activity inducing man-made earthquakes by lubricating the faces of underground earthquake faults, so that they slip and slide more easily and frequently?

Not according to a senior Department of Interior official, who was quick to note that no link between quakes and fracking has been established ? even if the waste water from the process, when injected, might be behind the quake mystery.

The USGS findings "do not suggest that hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as ?fracking,? causes the increased rate of earthquakes," David Hayes, deputy secretary of Interior, wrote on his blog Wednesday.

While it appears likely that the increased rate of earthquakes is man-made, it's unclear if that is related to changes in production methods or the rate of oil and gas production, he wrote.

"USGS?s scientists have found, however, that at some locations the increase in seismicity coincides with the injection of wastewater in deep disposal wells," he continued. Even so, "[w]e also find that there is no evidence to suggest that hydraulic fracturing itself is the cause of the increased rate of earthquakes."

Best Buy details its 50 big box store shutdowns in the US, most will close by May 12th

We knew Best Buy planned to close 50 of its big box retail locations by the end of its 2013 fiscal year, and now (just days after Mike Mikan took the CEO-reigns from Brian Dunn) it's detailed all of the stores that'll be getting the boot. As it stands, two locations have already been shut down, with six others set to close before the year is out -- and the company hopes to clear out the remaining 42 before May 12th. Employees at most of the stores were informed of the news this weekend, and despite the impending closures, the company says it'll try to re-position them within the company or offer up severance packages. Past that, Best Buy is also reaching out to the customers of these stores, noting that they'll still have other nearby locations to choose from -- try-before-you-buy online shoppers rejoice. There's still no specific word about the 100 Best Buy Mobile stores it hopes to setup, but more information will be forthcoming later in the year. Late-night poll: Do you use, or want to use, the FM radio feature?

Tonight's poll comes thanks to our lovable forums Admin Cory Streater, who brought up a great question on episode 93 of the Android Central podcast -- I wonder how many people really use the FM radio? None of us were any help (we can't ever agree on anything) but you guys sure can be. 

I get why people use it. It's subscription free, doesn't use data, and has a bigger selection of music that you could ever hope to have in your personal cloud or on the phone itself. Maybe the best reason I've ever heard is that it's great for listening to the news while on the treadmill at the gym. The other side of the coin -- wired headphones suck, radio stations suck, commercial music sucks, etc. People have just as many reasons why they don't use it as those who do use it.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't use it, but I do see the appeal. And not everything on the radio sucks. But asking you guys is a much better idea, so tell us all in the poll, and fire away in the comments to let us know why you voted the way you did.

When Google launched Gmail in Germany in 2005, it was quickly barred from using the Gmail name for its email product there. German entrepreneur Daniel Giersch, after all, had registered the 'G-mail' trademark (short for Giersch mail)?for his physical and electronic mail service in Germany in 2000, long before Google had even announced its own service. Instead of 'Gmail,' German Internet users who wanted to use Gmail had to go to googlemail.com. Android eating up Apple in China with huge market share

We've all seen this picture before right? Well, over in China this is quite literally what is happening in their mobile market. While 1-in-10 people in the worlds most populated country own an iOS device, Android definitely rules the roost. 

A Beijing based analytics firm, has said that Android has risen from 33.6% to a staggering 68.4% market share by the end of 2011. iOS in comparison lagged behind with just 5.7%, behind Symbian who still maintain an 18.7% share. 

So what does this all mean? Well, it obviously means there's a whole heap of Android devices being sold in China. We should also consider the importance of low-cost devices, from manufacturers such as Huawei, ZTE and the like that sell well in Asia. Symbian too still inhabits a lot of low end devices.

On a lighter note, the report also suggests that the concept of "mianzi" also factors into the equation. In English this translates to "reputation," with the iPhone in particular being seen as a status symbol. With the iPhone 4S looking the same as its predecessor, there is less reason to upgrade and enhance ones status further. Crazy.

Okay, we have some excellent and some disappointing Skyrim tidbits to share. The good news being that bestseller The Elder Scrolls V is finally adding (real) support for Microsoft's Kinect, but unfortunately, it's coming exclusively to the Xbox console (sorry PC folks). That said, developer Bethesda says the update -- which is arriving later this month -- will bring more than 200 voice commands to the title, allowing things like Dragon Shouts, Follower Commands and Hotkey Equipping. In addition to busting out your best moves, you'll also be able to control menus within the game, as well as save and load your Skryim progress. While the full list of commands is set to be unveiled "in the coming weeks," there's a sneak preview waiting on you right now just past the break.

Zimmerman in custody, charged with second-degree murder

Hours after Florida Special Prosecutor Angela Corey announced that George Zimmerman had been charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, Martin's parents told NBC's Brian Williams that Zimmerman's arrest helps fulfill their goal of bringing their son's shooter to justice. Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, said Zimmerman is "troubled by the charges."?

Updated at 10:27 p.m. ET: George Zimmerman is in custody in Florida and will be charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, authorities announced Wednesday. His attorney said he would plead not guilty.

"We did not come to this decision lightly," Angela Corey, the special prosecutor appointed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott to re-examine the case, said at a news conference in Jacksonville.

Corey had previously said she wouldn't present the case to a grand jury, which took first-degree murder off the table. Second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara ? who took the case late Wednesday after Zimmerman's previous attorneys withdrew ? said Zimmerman would plead not guilty and that he would seek Zimmerman's release on bond. Zimmerman was scheduled for an initial hearing Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey announces that she will seek a second-degree murder charge against George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

"I think he's troubled by the fact the state decided to charge him," O'Mara said. "I would think anyone charged with second-degree murder would be scared."

Corey said she decided last week to seek the charge but needed several days to make sure all details were in order. She said she had informed Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton.

In a brief statement in Washington at a news conference at a gathering of the National Action Network, Fulton said: "We just wanted an arrest, and we got it, and I say thank you. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus."

(The National Action Network is a project of the Rev. Al Sharpton, host of MSNBC-TV's "PoliticsNation," who has played a prominent role in advocating for charges against Zimmerman.)

On NBC's Rock Center Wednesday evening, Fulton said that she found Corey professional.?

"I believe there is a human side to her," she said. "I believe she looked at the evidence, spoke with the witnesses and determined what (Zimmerman) should be charged with."

Ben Crump, the attorney for Martin's parents, said the decision was about "justice, justice and only justice." He said it was important that Zimmerman have a fair trial, even though "we believe in our hearts that he was wrong to kill Trayvon Martin."

Corey refused to discuss details of the case, saying she was committed to protecting the interests of both Martin and Zimmerman.

"So much information on this case has gotten released that should never have been released," she said.

Zimmerman, 28, arrived in a police caravan at the Seminole County jail about 8:20 p.m. ET. Under Florida law, he must be taken before a judge within 24 hours of his return to the county, where he has acknowledged he shot and killed Martin, 17, in the town of Sanford on Feb. 26. Corey wouldn't say where he was being held to protect his safety.

Scott, who appointed Corey after Seminole County authorities declined to bring charges, said in a statement that the matter "is now in the hands of the judicial system and I am confident justice will prevail."

Attorney doubts fair trial
Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother is Peruvian, says he shot Martin, who was black, in self-defense after following him in a gated community in Sanford. Police questioned Zimmerman but decided against pressing charges.

The lack of an arrest or charges had sparked protests nationwide, with critics alleging that Zimmerman confronted Martin because of his race. Zimmerman's supporters deny that.

Trayvon Martin's parents say they're thankful there was an arrest but that 'this is just the beginning.' NBC's Ron Allen reports.

The decision whether to arrest Zimmerman was delayed for several weeks because Zimmerman had indicated that he would argue self-defense under Florida's so-called Stand Your Ground law, which shields subjects from prosecution if a judge determines that the shooting was justified to protect life or property.

Corey called the law "a tough affirmative defense to overcome," but she said, "If 'Stand Your Ground' becomes an issue, we will fight that affirmative defense."

O'Mara, Zimmerman's attorney, told reporters that he didn't think Zimmerman could get a fair hearing "today" because "the emotions are just running high in Central Florida."

"I am hoping the hatred settles down," he said.

A federal civil rights investigation is also under way, but U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that the Justice Department had to meet a "high bar" to bring any charges.

The main federal role is to "support the state in its ongoing investigation," Holder told reporters Wednesday morning in Washington. At the same time, he said, the Justice Department is conducting its "own thorough and parallel investigation" to try to resolve the case "in as fair and complete a way and as quickly as we can."

For most diets, you must have some idea of the amount of calories you can eat each day without gaining or losing weight. This is known as your daily caloric maintenance level, or DCML.

There are two ways to determine your daily calorie maintenance level, or DCML:

You can use a calorie calculator, which takes into account several factors including age, height, weight, sex and activity level, and suggests how many calories you should be eating each day to maintain your current weight. 2. Trial and Error ? One semi-accurate way to determine your DCML is to keep a food log for the next 2-4 weeks. Detail every calorie you eat per day, and find your daily average. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning at the start and end of this period. For each extra pound you gained, you have eaten 3500 too many calories. For each pound you lost, you have eaten 3500 too few calories. Total up any calories from weight loss or weight gain, and divide them by the number of days you kept a log. This will provide you with an average number of calories you under ate or overate. If you overate, subtract this number from your average to find your DCML. If you under ate, add this number to your average to find your DCML.

Trial And Error Example

Let?s say you logged your food intake for 30 days, and found that you gained an extra 3 pounds while eating an average of 3000 calories per day. Multiple this 3 pound gain by 3500 calories, to find the total amount of calories you overate.

3 pounds x 3500 calories = 10,500 calories that you overate. Next, divide this amount by the number of days in your logging period, in this case 30 days. this will provide you with an average amount of daily calories that you overate.

10,500 extra calories divided by 30 days = 350 extra calories per day. What does this mean? If you cut back your daily calorie intake by 350 calories per day, you wouldn?t have gained weight. You ate 3000 calories per day and gained 3 pounds. If you would have eaten 2650 calories per day, theoretically your weight would have stayed the same.
