Owning your own home is a great experience, but it is not without its responsibilities. Every house requires maintenance and beyond that, every house can benefit from home improvements. You need not be afraid of doing your own work on your home. With a few quick hints like the ones below, you can attack home improvement work with confidence.
?
One of the best home improvements you can do when selling your home is to replace the old and worn-out carpets. This will make the property look nice and give a great impression on potential buyers. Buyers quickly get turned off if they think that they are going to have to replace the stained and tattered carpets in every room.
?
When it comes to home improvement, be sure to promote the leaks at your house to the top of your priority list. This is important because leaks can be either dangerous, detrimental to the structure of your house, or to your pocketbook. Check all water pipes and fixtures for leaks on a regular basis. Install a CO2 detector in your house for gas leaks.
?
Windows
?
Light is a premium often overlooked in home improvement projects. There are far, far more rooms in the world that are too dim than there are rooms that are too bright. Adding more light fixtures is almost always a wise home improvement job, and often a fairly simple one. In more extensive renovation work, installing more windows accomplishes similar results.
?
When childproofing your home, do not overlook your windows as potential danger zones. Dangling cords from blinds or shades pose a strangulation hazard, and your child can fall through a wide-open window, even if there is a shade in place. Take a look at each window in your home carefully and adjust your treatments and habits according to the dangers posed by each specific window.
?
Windows And Doors
?
Windows and doors make a perfect home improvement project. You can add an indoor window box or change out your old patio doors for French doors. It is often possible to find good deals on these types of materials at the home improvement store. You won't have to spend a lot of money to make a dramatic change.
?
Hunt down drafts in your house around your windows and doors, and seal them with insulation or weather-stripping to make your home more energy-efficient. On a breezy day, hold a lit candle or a stick of burning incense around the edges of your doors and windows -- with the drapes tied back away from the edges -- to easily spot drafty areas as the flame moves or the smoke wafts.
?
Little tips like these can keep the home improvement process painless and keep homeowners from getting frustrated. Working on your house should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience; educating yourself on the subject will ensure that this is the case. When you have the proper information ahead of time, even the most complex home improvement project can be a snap.

You Are Here: Home ? General News ? We can?t afford to lose momentum on food security now ? Kofi Annan
Page last updated at Friday, September 28, 2012 13:13 PM //
Kofi Annan
The Chairman of the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF), Dr Kofi Annan, has called on African leaders not to be complacent despite the success chalked up in the area of agriculture in the recent past.
He said it was time African leaders upheld their part of the bargain by increasing investments and encouraging public private partnerships to ensure that all farmers, large and small, contributed to ensuring food security on the continent.
?We cannot afford to lose the momentum in ensuring food security now and action is required from all governments on the continent and every partner to achieve this,? he said.
Dr Annan, a former United Nations Secretary General, was addressing the 2nd African Green Revolution Forum in Arusha Tanzania Thursday.
He said African governments must help farmers to expand their farms and to treat their farms as businesses.
He indicated that through the Alliance for a Green Revolution on Africa (AGRA) seven countries had been reached with 330 new varieties of crops while 380 hectares of land had been rejuvenated in the last three years.
Dr Annan said Africa could transform its agricultural sector significantly, if their leaders collaborated with the right partners adding that strategic change would only occur with result oriented partnerships.
Tanzanian President, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, blamed African leaders for not doing enough to ensure adequate investment in agriculture.
He noted that many African countries had failed to implement the 2003 Maputo Declaration which enjoined them to commit 10 per cent of their budgets to agriculture leaving the sector undeveloped.
Opening the ongoing AGRF, President Kikwete said though African leaders knew what they needed do to revolutionalise agriculture and help change the fortunes of millions of Africans whose lives depended on agriculture, they had not done that.
He said: ?We know what needs to be done, we are doing something about it but we have not done enough to support the development of agriculture in Africa.?
President Kikwete said if African leaders did not invest in agriculture, the much taunted agricultural transformation would be like ?a song without dancers.?
He said it was time for African leaders to adopt more effective ways of growing and developing agriculture on the continent to promote food security, enhance nutritional levels and create better living conditions for the people.
President Kikwete indicated that though most economies in Africa relied on agriculture, the sector remained backward characterised by traditional methods of farming, low use of improved seeds, fertilisers and lack of financial credits.
He said it was disturbing that despite the fact that about 70-80 per cent of Africa?s population were involved in agriculture, only five per cent of all arable land was irrigated in Africa.
Also he said Africa used only 10 per cent of the world?s fertiliser. The results, he said, had been small farm sizes, low yields, low income and poverty.
He said it was not surprising that about 239 million of the continent?s people were food insecure.
President Kikwete stressed the crucial need for African leaders to help scale up investments in agriculture by investing in irrigation, increase support for research and agricultural development and support mechanised agriculture.
He called on leaders to be responsive to the needs of all farmers, especially small holder farmers, to reduce poverty and hunger and enhance living standards.
The President of the AGRA, Ms Jane Karuku, noted that misguided policies and neglect had affected the development of agriculture in Africa and stated that the AGRA was committed to working to unlock the potentials in the agricultural sector of Africa.
She said subsistence farming should not be seen as an acceptable way of farming and that the AGRA continued to provide improved seeds and technical support, particularly for small holder farmers to improve their productivity and profitability and integrate them into competitive markets.
Ms Melinda Gates, Co-founder and Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said there was the need to improve agriculture in African countries if they wanted to see a change in the lives of its people.
Over 1,200 stakeholders in agriculture, including 14 heads of state, 23 ministers of agriculture, agri-business entrepreneurs and farmers are attending the forum in Arusha Tanzania.
The AGRA is an initiative of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help promote food security on the continent.
The three-day forum being held on the theme: ?Scaling Investment and Innovation for Sustainable Agricultural Growth and Food Security would discuss effective ways to ensure food security on the African continent.?
RIM may have given us hope that its transition to BlackBerry 10 has turned a corner, but that doesn't mean the dark clouds have entirely broken just yet. The company's second fiscal quarter saw it generate $2.9 billion in revenue, a slight gain over last quarter, while it posted a net loss of $235 million -- again better than expected, but not the best news it could deliver. Waterloo's main challenge was holding on to its smartphone base. While RIM did expand the total BlackBerry user base to 80 million, its phone shipments dropped from 7.8 million to 7.4 million and were braced by shipments of just 130,000 PlayBooks, or half as many tablets as were delivered in the spring.
The sunshine is mostly found in the total picture. RIM says it's still on track to deliver the first BlackBerry 10 phones in early 2013; while the smartphone maker is bracing for an operating loss in its ongoing third quarter, the higher revenue and reduced losses suggest to CEO Thorsten Heins that RIM is getting its fiscal house in order before BlackBerry 10 (hopefully) renews interest. Full details of the company's financial performance are available after the break.
Curiosity drops a few rather big names in recent images taken with its MAHLI camera.

Curiosity drops a few rather big names in recent images taken with its MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) camera: here we see a plaque affixed to its surface bearing the names and signatures of U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Office of Science and Technology Director John Holdren, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and other key figures responsible for making the Mars Exploration Program possible.

Engineers mounted a 1909 penny is mounted on the rover for calibration purposes. It is one of several images the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) has taken during the check out of its robotic arm.
You never know? even on another planet it can?t hurt to have friends in high places! ? The image was captured by MAHLI on September 19, the 44th sol of the MSL mission. (See the original raw downlink?here.)
The rectangular plaque is made of anodized aluminum, measuring 3.94 inches (100 mm) high by 3.23 inches (82 mm) wide. It?s?attached to the front left side of Curiosity?s deck with four bolts. (Explore Curiosity in 3D?here.)
Dust, pebbles and variously-sized bits of Mars can be seen scattered around the plaque and deck, leftover detritus from the rover?s landing.
The complete list of signatures is:
Barack Obama, President, United States of America
Joe Biden, Vice President
John P. Holdren, Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy
Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Edward J. Weiler, Associate Administrator, Science Mission Directorate (2008?2011)
James Green, Director, Planetary Sciences Division
Doug McCuistion, Director, Mars Exploration Program
Michael Meyer, Program Scientist, Mars Exploration Program
David Lavery, Program Executive, Mars Science Laboratory
In another image taken on the same sol, Curiosity shows some national pride with a circular medallion decorated with the stars and stripes of the American flag. The 68-mm-wide circular aluminum plate is affixed to one of the rover?s?rocker arms. It?s just?one of its four ?mobility logos? ? the others having the NASA logo, the JPL logo and the Curiosity mission logo.
The main purpose of Curiosity?s MAHLI camera is to acquire close-up, high-resolution views of rocks and soil at the rover?s Gale Crater field site. Developed for NASA by?Malin Space Science Systems?in San Diego, CA, the camera is capable of focusing on any target at distances of about 0.8 inch (2.1 centimeters) to infinity, providing versatility for other uses, such as views of the rover itself from different angles.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? We've heard it time and time again: exercise is good for us. And it's not just good for physical health -- research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?
A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health.
Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity -- such as social relationships and mutual support among team members -- that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.
Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.
The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.
Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.
These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors -- body image and social interaction -- may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.
"We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," says Monshouwer.
Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.

New AACP Practice Parameter on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and gender variant issuesPublic release date: 26-Sep-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Reports new article in Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Washington D.C., September 26, 2012 The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is proud to announce its new Practice Parameter on issues related to and affecting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and gender variant youth.
Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and gender variant children and adolescents face unique developmental challenges and stressors that can influence their mental health and wellbeing. Social issues such as stigma, bullying, and discrimination, and personal factors like internalized prejudice and feelings of being different are just a few of the concerns that can affect gender and sexual minority youth. To help combat these problems and inform mental health professionals and those caring for children and adolescents about current best clinical practices, the new Practice Parameter provides practice principles and also discusses cultural competence, research needs, and ethics.
Author Dr. Stewart L. Adelson said of the Parameter, "Through this effort, AACAP has provided mental health clinicians with the latest tools to help children and adolescents who may be growing up gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender to avoid or overcome problems like depression, anxiety, suicidality, substance-abuse, or high-risk behavior, for which they are sometimes at risk as a result of problems like family rejection or bullying."

The AARP Public Policy Institute recently release a report, "Meeting the Needs of Diverse Family Caregivers," that examines how addressing diversity among family caregivers can?help improve care transition and reduce?unnecessary hospitalizations and nursing home care.
Hospice Foundation of America has produced this free program to examine how hospice care can support?diverse populations.
Addressing Cultural Diversity in Hospice
Dying and death are not easy for any one person, family or community to manage. It is a human instinct to hope for comfort, peace, and dignity, and to be surrounded by loved ones at the end of life. And yet, there are differences in how people cope with dying and death. Our backgrounds and cultures can influence these end-of-life experiences, including how we deal with a terminal diagnosis and how we grieve a death. Many elements make up a person?s culture-- language, social circumstance, religion and spirituality, sexual orientation and gender. All of these can impact how individuals find meaning and purpose in their living and dying and come to terms with the loss and remembrance of family and loved ones. This program, Addressing Cultural Diversity in Hospice, looks at how our differences, and our similarities, affect end-of-life decisions, and how hospice care can support culturally diverse patients and families. (50 min)
Hospice outreach professionals should watch HFA's video, "Reaching Out to Underserved Populations" for examples of how hospices are being innovative in meeting the needs of their communities.
Scott Dennis, a 42-year-old Air Force veteran, never considered outright retirement after getting out of the military in 2009. Instead he went to work for private military and security firms and soon found himself back in Afghanistan.
"It was an easy decision," he told NBC News, saying he couldn't afford to not work and wasn't ready for a life of leisure. "The only drawback was the extended time away from home."
But as criticism continues to swirl around the private security firm formerly known as Blackwater, civilian contractors serving in combat zones, like Dennis, find themselves caught between the demand for their services and negative perceptions in the public and even the military.?Sometimes creative measures must be taken to ensure their own safety.?
On Sept 11, Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass., called for steeper fines and a potential ban on all future contracts for the private military and security contracting ?firm formerly known as Blackwater. Now on its third name, Academi (also formerly known as Xe) agreed in August to pay $7.5 million to settle charges for weapons export violations.?
?This has been a repeated problem that?s gone on ? this isn?t a one-off situation, and it?s not just Blackwater,? Tierney told POLITICO last Tuesday.??We?ve had companies taking millions of dollars from taxpayers, repeatedly making questionable decisions. ... If we don?t hold them accountable, then it?s going to keep happening.?
A day later Alan Estevez, assistant secretary of defense for logistics and materiel readiness, and Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Craig Crenshaw, the Joint Staff?s vice director of logistics, testified in favor of the use of private firms before the House Armed Services Committee, recommending that the Department of Defense ?continue its momentum? in the increasing use and role of civilian contractors.
It?s against this conflicting backdrop that the men and women in the private military and security contracting industry ??where many veterans turn for employment after military service???find themselves.?
Dennis had been a recruiter and then a loadmaster on special operations forces aircraft serving in Afghanistan before he retired. The unfolding financial crisis had him worried about job security, but there was never really any doubt about seeking employment with a contracting firm, he said.?
Though he initially took a pay cut when he worked at firms such as the Virginia-based Dyncorp and Los Angeles-based McNeil Technologies (now AECOM), Dennis eventually found he was making more than three times his previous active-duty salary.?
His contracting jobs were nothing like his former aviation career, however. During a one-year stint with McNeil Technologies, Dennis was stationed at a forward operating base ?in western Afghanistan, driving around the countryside in an armored vehicle with an Afghan liaison.?
Dennis said he was concerned about the lack of safety net for contractors in Afghanistan. He worked hard to make sure the Americans in uniform would remember he was essentially one of them.?
?There is very little support for contractors if something goes bad outside the wire and you need help,? Dennis said. ?I tried to develop strong relationships with (active-duty military members) at my forward operating base; that way they had a face to go with the name if I needed help.??
Perception of civilian contractors took a hit among the military as well as the general public after the 2007 Blackwater shootings in Baghdad. Dennis said he thinks contractors are perhaps over-regulated now partially because of the resulting blowback.
?After the incidents in Iraq they became the poster child of the evil contractors shooting up towns,? he said. ?Most contractors are not armed now, and I think (that lack of weapons)?may take away what little self defense contractors had.?
And there is little leeway for illicit defensive measures. He recounted the tale of a colleague who?d lost his job for carrying an M4 rifle while out in the field in Afghanistan.
But there are real risks that come along with the job: More than 2,700 American civilian contractors have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, according to numbers?published by the Department of Labor.
Despite the fact that many contractors are also veterans, relations between the civilians and military are not always convivial, Dennis said.
?I?ve seen contractors mistreated on a regular basis when it comes to living conditions and other things,? he said. ?There is kind of a mindset of ?They are making lots of money, so screw those guys.??

PFT: Even before Monday night?s Packers-Seahawks game, the officiating lockout had reached a tipping point. Casual, Super-Bowl-only fans were buzzing about the brouhaha, and the NFL?s ?remain calm . . . all is well . . . ALL IS WELL!? mantra was regarded as laughable. But the NFL had been lucky. No game had been decided by a bad call in a decisive moment. So much for that.

(ABC?NEWS) -- The coach of a youth baseball team called the Long Island Vengeance allegedly pursued a real-life vengeance of his own against a rival coach.
Robert Sanfilippo, 45, was arrested Friday on 20 counts of aggravated harassment and one count of stalking during a game at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, N.Y.
Police said Sanfilippo bought an untraceable cell phone after an altercation with John Reardon, a rival coach, in May.
He then sent ?several text messages with pictures, threatening to do harm to the victim, his son, and his wife,? the Suffolk County Sheriff?s Office said in statement.
Reardon told Newsday the texts included pictures of him and his wife that appeared to have been taken with a long-distance zoom lens. Even more disturbing, Reardon told the newspaper, the person threatened to pick up his 10-year-old son at the bus stop.
?When he suddenly started mentioning my son by name, it just hit me that it was this guy,? Reardon said of Sanfilippo. ?That?s when it got scary and that?s when I went to the police.?
Sanfilippo was scheduled to be arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip, N.Y. It was not immediately clear if he has an attorney.
