PFT: Why is?Ray Lewis retiring now?

Chicago Bears v Minnesota VikingsGetty Images

Adrian Peterson had 861 rushing yards in December, the most any player has ever gained in any month in NFL history. So it?s not exactly a surprise that he was chosen as the NFC?s offensive player of the month.

But while the honor isn?t surprising, the production Peterson had in December was stunning. To illustrate just how great Peterson?s December was, consider this: Of the 32 NFL teams, 14 of them didn?t have a single player rush for 861 yards for the entire season. Here?s a list of players who were the leading rushers on their teams who had fewer yards for the entire season than Peterson had in December:

LeSean McCoy, Eagles, 840 yards
Vick Ballard, Colts, 814 yards
Michael Turner, Falcons, 800 yards
Mikel Leshoure, Lions, 798 yards
DeAngelo Williams, Panthers, 737 yards
Willis McGahee, Broncos, 731 yards
Darren McFadden, Raiders, 707 yards
Ryan Mathews, Chargers, 707 yards
DeMarco Murray, Cowboys, 663 yards
Jonathan Dwyer, Steelers, 623 yards
Mark Ingram, Saints, 602 yards
Alex Green, Packers 464 yards
Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars, 414 yards
LaRod Stephens-Howling, Cardinals, 357 yards

Peterson?s December would have made him the leading rusher on nearly half the teams in the league, including the two teams that have home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs.

In five December games, Peterson had 210, 154, 212, 86 and 199 yards, and he was the biggest reason the Vikings rode a four-game winning streak to the playoffs. Now the Vikings will hope they can ride Peterson to another four-game winning streak in the postseason.

Windows Phone fans petition Square, Instagram, Google for apps

6 hrs.

Are you using Windows Phone but missing a favorite app? Maybe an online petition will do the trick.

That?s the strategy being tried by some Windows Phone users in an attempt to get companies such as?Square,?Google?and?Instagram?to make versions of their apps for Microsoft?s mobile platform.

It?s a testament to the loyalty of Windows Phone fans, but also to the lingering holes?in the Windows Phone Store.

Microsoft says there are?more than 150,000 apps and games in the store, but the absence of some high-profile apps can make potential customers wary of buying Windows Phone. It?s a chicken-and-egg problem, because Windows Phone?s?relatively small market share?makes it tough for developers to justify the expense of making apps for the platform.

(As I noted on Monday, I?ve?made the switch to Windows Phone, and so far, at least, I?ve actually had good success finding the apps that I need; I?ll have more in a follow-up post.)

The?petition to Square?seeks to convince the mobile payments company to make its popular credit-card scanning device and app available for Windows Phone. The person behind the Square petition is?Ezekiel Carsella,?an independent tech blogger?in South Carolina who goes by nickname, ?The Microsoft Missionary.?

Carsella explains via email that he got the idea after seeing Intuit?drop support for its GoPayment app?on Windows Phone. He was also inspired by the petition to Google from Windows Phone users.?His dad is planning to open a food truck, and he wants to be able to recommend Windows Phone to him, but without a good credit card terminal solution, it?s not an easy sell.

His petition?is available here, with a target of 5,000 signatures.??Not only would Square bring along itself but a bunch of other high quality apps that would also bring along more users,? Carsella?says.

He adds, ?You might ask, ?Do you think a petition will really make a difference?? Frankly I do. Why? Because people by themselves even in mass numbers don?t have the same effect as that same amount in one organized protest.?

The petition to Google has received more than 6,200 signatures, but it faces an uphill climb: Google?s recent announcement that its Gmail service will be?ending support for Microsoft?s Exchange ActiveSync protocol?is a sign of how the company is approaching Windows Phone.

Google?makes a native search app for Windows Phone, last updated in March, but?the petition?asks the company to bring other apps to Windows Phone including Google+, Google Talk and Drive.

One popular app that doesn?t require a petition is Pandora, which is slated to come to Windows Phone this year along with a year?s worth of ad-free service for Windows Phone users.

Pot Legal in Washington and Colorado?but not for Servicemembers

? January 3, 2013Posted in: Operations

Washington and Colorado have recently updated their laws on the use of marijuana, essentially decriminalizing use for civilians, however, the Navy reminds Sailors?it?s Zero Tolerance drug policy regulations remain unaffected:

The Zero Tolerance drug policy was implemented after a fatal crash of an EA-6B Prowler n board USS Nimitz in 1981, killing 14 crew members and injuring 45 others. Autopsies were performed and several members of the flight deck crew tested positive for marijuana. Following this discovery, then-President Ronald Reagan instituted a Zero Tolerance drug policy across all of the U.S. Armed Forces.? As a result regular, random urinalysis drug checks are conducted on all military personnel.

From Couch Potato To Calendar Girl: Conquering The Fitness Phobia

By ML Van Valkenburgh

It's New Year's Day 2013, and many of us have either made resolutions or will make them today. Most of those resolutions will have to do with health and fitness - this year, we're going to make better diet choices. This year, we're going to run a 5K. This year, we're going to join a gym and actually go.

A few of us will keep them. Most of us will stick with it for anywhere from a few weeks to early March, which is the window during which most New Year's Resolutions go their merry way and we go back to being our old, sedentary selves.

I gave up making resolutions long ago, because they were a recipe for disappointment and a source of increasingly negative feelings about myself because I couldn't stick with whatever it was I'd resolved to do.

The seeds of change were planted in the fall of 2011. I got sick (again), and I couldn't get well. I coughed and hacked and cracked a couple of ribs. I missed six weeks of work during the busiest season of the year. I took antibiotics and over-the-counter everything and even when the coughing was over, I was chronically tired and uncomfortable. I was also fat. Somehow, between the spring of 2011 and early 2012, I put on 50 pounds and went from being a size 2 to a size 14. I don't really know what happened - it was as if my metabolism just stopped dead. But I had hit rock bottom. My immune system could take no more. Neither could my self-image.

I consulted my doctor, who was just as puzzled as I. He ordered tests, as doctors do when they have no idea what the heck has happened to you, and in February of 2012, he announced the findings: My body was completely depleted of Vitamin B12, which gives us energy and keeps our immune systems healthy. Also, my triglycerides were getting high. But instead of prescribing drugs, he did a few things that changed my life. First, he started me on B12 injections; first weekly, then monthly. He also told me to take fish oil capsules. And he reiterated the importance of diet and exercise.

He wasn't the first person to point out that, aside from having a job that required me to be on my feet, I was totally lacking in the exercise department. Nor was he the first person to point out that my diet was made up of complete junk. But for the first time, I really listened to what he had to say and I slowly began to make changes.

At first, I admit, I focused on the diet part, because exercise has always been somewhat terrifying. So I cut way back on carbs, quit drinking beer and started buying fresh foods, including fruits and veggies that I would never have otherwise eaten. Everywhere I saw a chance to substitute something healthier for something drowning in saturated fats or full of preservatives, I did it. And I began to feel better. But it wasn't enough. I was using an app called My Fitness Pal to keep track of my calories eaten versus my calories burned every day, but I felt like I needed something more. How could I find healthier recipes? How could I get a handle on what claimed to be healthy and what actually was healthy? And how on earth could I, at age 37, start exercising? Other than intermittent periods of bike riding or rollerblading through Humboldt Park, I hadn't regularly exercised since before college.

At 14, my competitive diving career ended with the first of many shoulder dislocations caused by a congenital defect in my bone structure. Doctors and physical therapists told me I'd never have upper body strength like other people. And exercises like running were boring and seemed pointless. Exercise in general seemed futile.

But I found myself wanting more. Maybe it was the extra energy from the B12. Maybe it was just time. Either way, I was no longer satisfied with my couch potato status. Fifteen days after my 37th birthday, on April 25, 2012, I did a search for the best health and fitness apps for my iPhone and stumbled across Fitocracy. It had good reviews, and, even better, it was free. I downloaded it and now, a little over seven months later, I can honestly say it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

Fitocracy was developed by two former self-described video game addicts, Dick Talens and Brian Wang, who met in the weight room as students at Penn. Dick had become unhealthily overweight from his years in front of the console, while Brian was skinny and weak. Both had begun to change that with weightlifting, and both had a desire to help others transform themselves.

They also both had something in common with me, and with many of the people I know: they were once couch potatoes. And, as video game junkies, they knew something that many people don't realize: people respond to the reward of scoring points, even if the points are ultimately meaningless to the world at-large.

My journey into the world of Fitocracy began in a group called "Healthy Eating," because I wasn't yet ready to tackle serious exercise. Fitocracy is set up much like Facebook, in that users relate to one another through posts, can "follow" one another, can "prop" each others' posts, can send private messages, and can get the interaction with others that our social-media crazed society seems to need. Not only did I instantly feel welcomed, I felt at home. No one made judgements. When I made good choices and posted about them, I got props and soon I acquired a few followers. I read what others wrote, asked questions, followed others, gave props, and within a week was logging what little exercise I was getting, from walking the dog to choosing to take the stairs at work instead of the elevator.

Over the past seven months, I have gone from being an unhealthy, worried, health-phobic person to being a member of a growing online community of healthy, supportive people who encourage and inspire me. I now belong to my local community center's fitness center, and the young girl who would never have any upper body strength has become a woman who strives to break personal records (I can now deadlift 90 lbs. and actually enjoy bench pressing and leg presses (PR 140 lbs), among other activities.

Yesterday, I earned the points to "level up" to level 28 (the higher your level, the harder it is to level up). I pay a monthly fee for the privilege of being a "Fitocracy Hero," which allows me to duel with friends and followers (of which I have almost 500 now!), among other things. I even have a personal trainer, Daniel Kreger, who runs his training business almost entirely online based on your goals and abilities. He writes programs for his clients on a weekly basis, and stays in close touch to make sure you're on track, or, if you're not, what he can do to help you get there. For those of you who find trainers intimidating and obnoxious, I highly recommend Dan, one of the world's nicest people. His blog and contact information can be found at www.djkreger.me.

In early December I had the opportunity to go to New York City and meet many fellow Fitocrats, including much of the Fitocracy team (Talens, Wang, CPO Jared Cocken, and others). It was a terrific event that included some great discussions about health and nutrition, training, and pretty much every other topic under the sun (plus an open bar, courtesy of Fitocracy!). Realizing that the people I interacted with online were real people who go through many of the same struggles I do, and enjoying the company of like-minded people with similar desires to improve themselves, was a real coup for me.

Finally, there's the calendar. Earlier in the fall of 2012, I joined a group created by a Fitocracy member that was intended for people who were interested in seeing both male and female Fito calendars for 2013. The calendars would feature members and be free for download. There was some sort of challenge included, although I didn't pay attention to that part - I was simply interested to see what the finished product would look like.

Join Fitocracy. Join the Fitocrat Calendar Group. Check out Miss April.

P.S. I've now lost 20 lbs. of fat, can wear a size 8, and gained a surprising amount of muscle and self-confidence. I've still got a long way to go. My resolve isn't going anywhere. Bring it, 2013!

Council of Foreign Relations website hacked

21 hrs.

How would you like it if one of your favorite websites were hacked and rigged to infect you with malware??

That's what seems to have happened to the website of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR), a New York-based bipartisan think tank with a long list of illustrious members.?

The CFR's website was infected around Dec. 21 with a Trojan that exploited a previously unknown, or zero-day, flaw in older versions of Internet Explorer, setting up visitors using IE for a?drive-by download infection.?

"The vulnerability is a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in the way that Internet Explorer accesses an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated," Microsoft said in a?security advisory?posted Saturday. "The vulnerability may corrupt memory in a way that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user within Internet Explorer."?

The malware affects Internet Explorer versions 6 through 8. Internet Explorer 9 and 10 are not affected, meaning users of Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 can upgrade to those browsers to avoid infection.?

Microsoft is working on a fix, but in the meantime?recommends?that Windows users who cannot upgrade to newer versions of Internet Explorer set their Internet and intranet security-zone settings to "High," to set up alerts before running Active Scripting and to install the free?Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit. [Update: Microsoft has?posted a "fix-it,"?a script that temporarily fixes the problem while the company continues to work on a full patch.]?

Chinese connection??
The CFR website compromise was first reported by the?Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news blog that quoted anonymous sources as saying the attack seemed to originate in China.?

FireEye, a Milpitas, Calif.-based information-security company, confirmed the CFR website was hosting malicious code in the form of a rigged Adobe Flash file.?

In its blog posting,?FireEye noted?that the code associated with the malware also restricted its victims to only systems using English, Russian, Chinese, Korean or Japanese, and that some internal code used simplified Chinese characters, as used on the Chinese mainland.?

Chinese state-sponsored hackers have been suspected in dozens of major information-stealing network attacks on Western governments, corporations and organizations over the past half decade.?

Such attacks are often politely termed "advanced persistent threats," and while most of the evidence points to China, few of the suspicions have been proven.?

American bigwig jackpot
Because the CFR is so prestigious and influential, experts characterized its website's hijacking as a?"watering-hole" attack.?

Watering-hole attacks are similar to?spear-phishing attacks?in that they target computers belonging to a specific person or a small group of people, but using Web browsers instead of email clients as the infection mechanism.?

In the case of the CFR, dozens of its prominent members would be ripe targets for state-sponsored information thieves. Former Treasury Secretary and Goldman Sachs head Robert Rubin co-chairs the board of directors, while former U.S. Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell sit on the board, as do journalists Tom Brokaw and Fareed Zakaria.?

Former secretaries of state Henry Kissinger, George Shultz and James Baker are reportedly lifetime members, as are current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as well as Hillary Clinton's possible replacement Sen. John Kerry.?

Other lifetime members are said to include Fox News Channel head Roger Ailes, his boss Rupert Murdoch, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Vice President Joe Biden, former vice presidents Dick Cheney and Walter Mondale and former presidents George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.

Russanda Rob to steal the Sheffield Stadium Sprint 280 Metres ? Dup

Battling for the ?200 prize money of the Grade OR Sheffield Stadium Sprint 280 Metres ? Dup are four entries, Lissom Jack, Lanesdown Geordy, Greenlough Ball and Russanda Rob. There are no hounds for the first the fourth trap for the 280 metres flat challenge tonight at Sheffield.

All the candidates have tried their luck at the identical level before, but the most convincing out of the four is the 8 to 11 backed sixth trap, Russanda Rob. The E. Parker trained is very lightly raced having started the profession only in September this season. The year-old has never given a shot to the Grade A races as he got into the Grade D races right after a few drilling sessions.

His debut success was in the Grade D2 280 metres flat on 17th November, 2012 at Sheffield over 280 metres. The favourite entry was dressed in the orange of the fifth trap. He deprived the rest of the lot of the lead for the second half of the trip as it got the year-old on the other end of the wire in 16.41 seconds.

The most popular entry defeated Swift Jogger by three lengths.

Russanda Rob encountered his first open challenge in the Sheffield Stadium Maiden Sprint on 20th December, 2012 at Sheffield over 280 metres. The trip turned out to be a dreadful loss as the evening?s favourite ended fifth only. He failed to start off strongly and then later it got coupled with getting bumped when racing from the first spot.

The race was won by, Hestia Jet, in 17.45 seconds.

Not only accepting the challenge once again, but coming back full swing on the bouncing back terms, Russanda Rob bagged the prize money of the Sheffield Stadium Puppy Sprint. It took him 16.83 seconds to make it to the other end of the wire on 24th December, 2012 at Sheffield.

He set at disadvantage the J. Davy trained, Phanters Bullett, by 6 ? lengths.

The striped jacket of the last trap proved out to be lucky for the year-old and once again he will break from the same stall tonight.

Connecticut attorney general says Newtown legal claim misguided

(Reuters) - A $100 million claim filed against the state of Connecticut in the wake of a school shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead two weeks ago is misguided, Connecticut's attorney general said in a statement on Monday.

Last week, a New Haven-based attorney filed an intention to sue the state on behalf of a 6-year-old survivor of the December 14 attack - the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

Under Connecticut law, any claim against the state must be approved by the state claims commissioner before it can move forward. The state attorney general serves as the state's defense attorney.

"Our hearts go out to this family, and to all the children and families affected by the Newtown shootings," Attorney General George Jepsen said in a statement. "They deserve a thoughtful and deliberate examination of the causes of this tragedy and of the appropriate public policy responses."

A public policy response by the U.S. Congress and the Connecticut state legislature would be "more appropriate" than legal action, said a spokeswoman for Jepsen.

"Although the investigation is still under way, we are aware of no facts or legal theory under which the State of Connecticut should be liable for causing the harms inflicted at Sandy Hill Elementary School," the statement added.

Connecticut attorney Irv Pinsky said he filed a claim on Thursday with state Claims Commissioner J. Paul Vance Jr.

Vance said on Monday that he has not yet seen the claim and could not comment on a pending legal matter.

The unidentified client, referred to as Jill Doe, heard "cursing, screaming, and shooting" over the school intercom when the gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, opened fire at Sandy Hill Elementary School, according to the claim.

Pinsky's claim said that the state Board of Education, state Department of Education and state education commissioner had failed to take appropriate steps to protect children from "foreseeable harm" and had failed to provide a "safe school setting."

"We all know it's going to happen again," Pinsky said last week. "Society has to take action."

Pinsky said he was approached by the child's parents within a week of the shooting. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

The shooting, in which Lanza took his own life, has prompted extensive debate about gun control and the suggestion by the National Rifle Association that schools be patrolled by armed guards. Police have said the gunman killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home in Newtown before going to the school about 5 miles away.

Earlier on Monday, a spokesman for Adam Lanza's father, Peter Lanza, said the family had claimed the gunman's body from the state medical examiner's office. Plans for Lanza's burial were not disclosed.

India gang rape spurs national dialogue

An Indian woman who was the victim of a gang rape and brutal beating earlier this month in New Delhi has been flown to Singapore for treatment, while the rest of India debates women's safety.

By Shivam Vij,?Contributor / December 27, 2012

Indian protesters listen to a speaker during a protest against a recent gang rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi, India, Thursday. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged Thursday to take action to protect the nation's women while the young rape victim was flown to Singapore for treatment of severe internal injuries.

The Indian government?s crackdown on the anti-rape protests that have continued for nearly two weeks in New Delhi has only aggravated public anger and concern about women?s safety.?

The protests were sparked by the gang rape and brutal assault of a 23-year-old student on a bus in the elite South Delhi district on Dec. 16.?

As the girl battles for her life in a Singapore hospital, Indians are debating how to make the country safer for women. Ten days after the incident, it dominates newspaper headlines and op-ed pages, pushing to the margins stories like the retirement of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, the popular Indian sportsperson, highlighting just how much the case has affected people.

Sexual harassment is rampant in India, and the public has been largely apathetic to women?s plight, but many are hoping the attack could be a turning point in the way India treats women.

Calls for capital punishment, including the chemical castration of rapists, have died down, with various women?s groups decrying them. Given that in 94 percent of rape cases the rapist is known to the victim, Nilanjana S. Roy, writing in The Hindu newspaper she wonders if the protestors would be okay with death penalty if it were their father, uncle, neighbors, or even if it meant convicting Indian security forces in conflict zones. ?

The Monitor reported that India is considering a fast-track court process to expedite rape cases and step up punishment for sexual violence on the heels of the bus rape incident.?

Beyond the law, what needs to happen, writes Shilpa Phadke, author of a book on women?s safety in Mumbai, has to do with how Indians use their streets: ?We are safer when there are more women (and more men) on the streets. When shops are open, when restaurants are open, when there are hawkers and yes, even sex workers on the street, the street is a safer space for us all.?

The outrage that this case has spurred might finally bring about a cultural change in India, Stephanie Nolen of The Globe and Mail suggests in a report:?
