Vokul Adds Excellent Voice Command Services to Your iPhone for Safe Use While Driving [Video]

Vokul Adds Excellent Voice Command Services to Your iPhone for Safe Use While Driving iOS: It's difficult to drive safely if you're using your iPhone, especially if you're looking at the screen. Vokul is a new app that lets you control your iPhone will driving with nothing but your voice.

You're probably well-aware that at this point Siri is only (officially) available for the iPhone 4S, leaving everyone else out of the voice command party. On top of that, Siri requires actually touching your phone to initiate a command. This isn't necessarily the safest option in the car. Vokul, on the other hand, works on pretty much any iDevice with iOS 4.1 or later and doesn't require you do anything other than say its name. When the app is open, Vokul will be listening for the words "Hey Vokul" at all times (by default?you can tell it to just accept voice commands without these keywords or require a tap first). When Vokul hears this phrase, it'll respond with a beep and you'll be able to tell it what you want to do. You can ask it to play any audio on your device, make a phone call, or send a text message. It'll respond to these commands even when you're listening to music, although I found that it sometimes needs you to try a couple of times if the music is particularly loud.

Overall it works very well. Text message dictation allows for punctuation and is remarkably accurate. It didn't make a single mistake with the six messages I tried. I was able to initiate calls very easily as well, and it helped me choose a phone number when there were more than one. The only disadvantage with calling is that it requires the app to close so the phone app can open, but Vokul will provide a push alert after the call has finished to make it easier to return to the app. Music works very well, too, but if you have any foreign music you're going to have to learn how to mis-pronounce its name. Vokul won't understand you if you're speaking Spanish or Japanese, for example, and guessing how it will speak words in foreign languages can sometimes be a little complicated.

Overall, Vokul is really great and especially attractive to those without Siri. It may be useful to those with Siri as well, however, as it's completely hands-free in the car. We hope to see more features in Vokul as it continues to develop, such as voice-assisted driving directions, but it's off to a great start.

2.5 mn gathered in Rome to see pope in 2011

More than 2.5 million people last year participated in gatherings in Rome attended by Pope Benedict XVI, the Vatican has said.

During 2011, a total of 2,553,800 people participated in various meetings with Benedict XVI including general audiences (400,000), private audiences (101,800), liturgical celebrations (846,000), and morning and evening prayers (1,206,000), it said.

The statistics include only events held at the Vatican or the pope's summer retreat in Castelgandolfo near Rome, according to the statement.

The estimated number -- based on distributed and requested tickets -- does not include attendance at events held elsewhere in Italy and abroad.

The Vatican said the attendance showed an increase 'with respect to the last three years'. It, however, did not provide any comparative data.

Chinese Reality TV Star Becomes State Enemy After She Jokes About Liking BMWs

video

Reality television in America is often taken for granted and derided as corrosive to the fabric of society. In China, however, it appears that the emergence of reality television in the form of dating shows has only prompted the same response from the communist government, as the single most popular show on Chinese television, ?If You Were The One,? breaks down cultural mores and exposes a side of the nation?s youth that yearns to speak freely about sex, money, fame, and family.

The show, the brainchild of producer Wang Peijie initially garnered attention simply by being provocative? among the many things previously alien to Chinese television were jokes about S&M and sexual fetishes, things the Chinese government is not particularly keen on allowing young people to discuss on television. The backlash from the government could have possibly been caused by the fact that the show was an resounding success, with 50 million viewers during the first half of 2010, a record-breaker. It didn?t help that the problematic content was not restricted to sex, but to what the government declared ?materialism and unhealthy, incorrect views on marriage?? people being honest about wanting a better future for themselves. The watershed moment appeared to come as a consequence of a comment from one contestant, Ma Nuo, a young lady who a male contestant tried to entice with a bicycle ride. ?I would rather cry in a BMW,? she replied, than be happy with him on a bicycle. And she wasn?t the only one speaking what is considered blasphemy in a communist nation:

The show?s notoriety surged after one contestant, Ma Nuo, rejected a man with her ?cry in a BMW? remark. Ms. Ma got thousands of messages from fans and critics alike. Supporters said she was only publicly voicing what many women think.

Ms. Ma, 23, said in an interview that producers had told the women not to spare the dignity of the male contestants. After the BMW comment, ?Because they saw that I was outspoken, they wanted me to say more controversial things,? she said.

On another episode, Zhu Zhenfang brushed off a suitor by saying that any man who wanted to shake her hand had to pay 200,000 renminbi, almost $32,000, because ?my boyfriend must have a monthly salary of 200,000? renminbi. Another woman, Yan Fengjiao, made the headlines when nude photographs of her appeared online.

Ma was wonderful for the shows ratings, but disastrous for its future and that of the genre. To prevent future ?Ma Nuo? moments, the government forced the show to choose older, more somber contestants, and added a ?sidekick? to the program especially designed to demonize contestants that went out of line, described by the New York Times as a ?matronly professor from the provincial Communist Party school.? As for the rise of copycat programs, the government now only allows two ?entertainment shows? on primetime wa sweek, rather than the 126 that aired a week this fall.

It is easy to dismiss and deride the reality programs the average American finds often unavoidable? the parade of Kardashian spins-offs, increasingly generic singing competitions, and basically anything on VH1. To Americans, much like the Kardashians themselves, the shows are one of the necessary evils of living in a free country, like taxes and fast food. To the Chinese, reality TV is increasingly becoming a form of rebellion, a necessary good on the road towards liberating an imprisoned country. If the Chinese government thinks it has a problem on its hands because young people know what BMWs are, just wait until they discover Justin Bieber.

Virginia to print, mail ballots despite Perry suit (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Virginia plans to print and mail absentee ballots for its upcoming Republican presidential primary with only candidates Mitt Romney and Ron Paul listed, a state official said on Friday, despite a court challenge from Rick Perry.

Texas Governor Perry sued Virginia election officials after state Republican officials ruled he did not get the required number of verified voter signatures, arguing the state's qualification process limits voters' access to the candidates of their choosing.

U.S. District Judge John Gibney set a January 13 hearing on the matter.

To comply with laws that protect overseas absentee voters, the state must send ballots to them at least 45 days before the March 6 primary contest, meaning they will have to be mailed by January 21. It takes about two weeks to prepare and mail ballots, a state official said.

Former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich also failed to get the 10,000 verifiable signatures, including at least 400 qualified voters from each congressional district, that are necessary to be included in Virginia's primary.

They are among the field of Republicans vying for the party's nomination to take on Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 2012 general election. The party nominee is chosen after contests pitting the candidates in individual states.

A Virginia official said the state will proceed with printing and mailing ballots with only former Massachusetts Governor Romney and U.S. Representative Paul listed.

"We need to proceed with the normal preparation and printing of absentee ballots that will allow us to meet those deadlines," Donald Palmer, secretary at the Virginia state board of elections, said.

"Those are hard deadlines and so we're going to proceed on our normal schedule," he said, adding that it takes a couple of weeks to prepare, print and mail absentee ballots. "So there's really no way to wait until the ruling to mail our ballots."

Without court intervention, that would make it difficult for Perry or Gingrich to get on the Virginia ballot. The court could order the state to reprint and re-issue them, a prospect that Palmer said would be expensive and would force the state to miss the statutory deadline.

A spokesman for Gingrich said his campaign likely will join Perry's lawsuit but a final decision has not yet been made. Judge Gibney gave candidates until January 6 to decide whether to join or oppose Perry's lawsuit.

"We are looking at whether or not we will join the Perry lawsuit," Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said in Des Moines. "Right now its under consideration -- (it's) more likely than not."

Ethiopia troops enter Somalia, control border town

? A resident and a military officer say Ethiopian troops have entered a border town in Somalia in what would be a third front against al-Shabab militants.

Resident Mohammed Abdi said hundreds of residents fled the border town of Beledweyne on Saturday after hundreds of Ethiopian and Somali troops moved in.

Capt. Hashi Nor of the Somali military confirmed that Somali and Ethiopian troops had moved in.

The movement appears to be a third front against al-Shabab, Somalia's strongest militant group. Kenyan troops are fighting al-Shabab in Somalia's south, and African Union troops in Mogadishu have mostly pushed al-Shabab fighters out of the capital.
