'The Innkeepers': Chills and Chuckles Share a Room | The Wrap ...

Scary things come to those who wait in ?The Innkeepers,? a spooky haunted-hotel movie that holds back on the frights until the exact moment that you think you?ve wandered into a mumblecore slacker comedy by mistake.

Delayed shocks seem to be a trademark for writer-director Ti West ? although ?trademark? might be putting too fine a point on it, what with this being only his second feature to open in theaters. In 2009?s acclaimed ?House of the Devil,? a spot-on evocation of 1980s babysitter-in-peril horror movies, West diverts the audience with long stretches where nothing much happens; it?s not until the terror gets ratcheted up in the third act that we realize that the suspenseful payoffs rely upon all those seemingly pointless moments earlier on.

That same strategy serves West well with the initially laconic and droll ?The Innkeepers.? Claire (Sarah Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy) are the skeleton crew working at the Yankee Pedlar Inn on the very last weekend before the place closes for good. Local legend says that a jilted bride named Madeline O?Malley committed suicide there and that her spirit continues to haunt the place, and Luke has created a web site dedicated to documenting all the paranormal phenomena on the premises.

But with the hotel closing, and the two front-desk clerks uncertain and seemingly nonplussed about their future career prospects, Luke and Claire mostly eschew ghost-chasing in favor of playing pranks on each other and ignoring the handful of guests who have checked in.

That all changes with the arrival of washed-up TV actress Leanne Rease-Jones (Kelly McGillis); Claire?s a fan of her sitcom work, but it?s Leanne?s new gig ? as a healer and medium with at least some working knowledge of the spirit world ? that encourages Claire to try to commune with the local poltergeists. And in movies like this, that?s never a good idea.

The few jolts that occur early on are the result of Claire and Luke trying to scare each other, which gives West the opportunity to lampoon many of his peers in the horror genre, who rely heavily on cheap gimmicks like cat-in-the-closet and quietquietNOISE to spook their viewers. Once things get legitimately terrifying, West has us so deeply inside his characters? heads and the hotel?s ghostly lore that he can pour on the suspense without having to cheat.

It also saves West from having to insert extraneous characters just to up the body count; the intimacy of a small cast serves the film well, particularly since everyone?s so terrific; Healy and Paxton have a snappy, lived-in rapport, McGillis provides a surprising level of gravitas, and Lena Dunham (?Tiny Furniture?) makes a hilarious cameo appearance as a local barista with a tendency to over-share.

Smart, funny and creepy, ?The Innkeepers? does a great deal for Ti West?s reputation as an up-and-coming filmmaker while simultaneously making rustic hotels seem a lot less quaint and charming.?

Getting rid of Acne Scars and Blemishes ... - New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Many people are in search of natural methods to combat acne scars and other marks left by acne. Fortunately, there are some methods that can be used to eradicate these unsightly blemishes left behind by acne.

The bright side behind natural home remedies for acne blemishes is that you will not have to purchase expensive products and most of the ingredients are readily available in your kitchen. There are two downsides to natural home remedies, though: the effects may take longer to notice and they might vary greatly from one person to the next. But, be patient and consistent with any natural home remedy.

Natural Acne Scar Removal

Before you try any natural home remedy for acne scars and marks, it is recommendable to wash your face using warm water. It is advisable to test the natural product on a small patch of skin to make sure that it does not produce an allergic reaction or irritation. Also keep in mind that all natural skin remedies can be diluted with a small amount of water to produce a gentler version.

Garlic

Because garlic has so many health benefits, it is considered a wonder food. It has also been used in the treatment of acne scars and marks left by pimples. Since garlic can produce a stinging sensation, make sure to rinse it off immediately if it starts burning.

To use the garlic, finely grate one clove of garlic and mix it with two tablespoons of water. Apply the paste directly to the area and massage carefully. The garlic exfoliates the skin and removes a layer of scar tissue, so don?t let it set for more than 5 minutes.

Because of the garlic?s irritating properties, always apply aloe vera directly to the affected area right after you have rinsed off the paste. Aloe vera will rehydrate your skin and protect it without causing further irritation.

Lemons and Tomatoes

Both lemons and tomatoes are fruits that are high in citric acid which has excellent properties for cleaning and rejuvenating the skin. They have been used for years in natural skin treatments. Tomatoes in particular can inhibit the production of sebum due to its high content of Vitamin A.

When you use lemon juice, just squeeze a tablespoon of juice. Apply the lemon juice to the affected area with a cotton ball. Rinse it off after ten minutes and use a mild cleanser.

Apply the tomato juice the same way you would apply the lemon juice. Remember to rinse after 10 minutes.

It always pays to use fresh natural products instead of the canned versions. The canned versions can contain additives that might produce side effects and reduce the full effect of the natural components.

These are not the only natural remedies that can be used to treat acne scarring. Remember the results of natural scar treatment can vary from person to person. Be patient and you will see how your mild acne scars and marks respond favorably to natural home remedies.

Investing in silver bullion coins ? Stockhouse | News You Love

Bullion coins can have the lowest premium of any other silver investment option

Silver is one of the most important and fascinating metals on the planet. The white metal?s bigger brother, gold, usually gets most of the attention. But there?s one thing no gold bull likes to talk about. It?s one of the secrets of the gold industry?

Gold is rarely consumed. Estimates suggest that 95% of all the gold that man has ever produced is still around in one form or another, either in coins, bars, artifacts, or jewellery.

The historic value and human attachment to gold ensures that it?s recycled to be used again and again. But unlike gold, silver is typically used only once, and then thrown out.

This might sound strange. But it?s just a matter of economics. Much of the silver that?s mined goes directly into the products we use every day: cellphones, laptops, hearing aids, electronic switches, etc. But only a tiny amount of silver is required for each product. And it?s simply cheaper to get new silver supplies from mining than to recycle the silver out of circuit boards and LCD screens.

But of course, silver is a finite resource. And global supplies from traditional mines will one day certainly be depleted. Meanwhile, there are no known major stockpiles of silver anywhere in the world. And demand for silver is expected to continue increasing. Silver demand in places like China and India are expected to jump 40% this year alone.

A spike in demand, coupled with the devaluation of the dollar, global political tensions and general market nastiness has edged a horde of new investors into silver.

For most investors starting out, silver bullion coins are the cheapest and easiest option. Bullion coins can have the lowest premium of any other silver investment option. But some silver coins are better options for investors than others. And buying the wrong silver coins could easily make or break your entire investment.

Best silver bullion coins for investment

The best silver bullion?coins to buy for investment?are simply those that will be easy to sell when it?s time to cash in. The last thing you want is to be stuck with a bunch of heavy metal you can?t sell.

As with any investment, liquidity is key. And just like any other investment, some silver coins are more liquid than others.

The most liquid silver bullion coins are those that are clearly marked of their fineness and backed by a major government or reputable private minters. And of all the silver bullion coins on the market, the U.S. Silver Eagle sets the standard.

The American Silver Eagle is the most recognized, trusted and liquid silver bullion coin in the world. It?s the perfect option for any size silver investment.

All precious metal bullion coins sell for a premium over the market?s spot price. Some coins command higher premiums than others.

A new, uncirculated Silver Eagle will typically sell for about $ 3 to $ 4 over spot price from an online bullion dealer right now, and about $ 5 to $ 7 over spot from a coin shop.

Premiums for Silver Eagles vary on eBay. And it?s really quite rare that you find a great deal. So eBay isn?t really worth your time if you?re looking to obtain a sizable silver investment.

There are also shipping and handling charges, both from eBay and from online bullion dealers, and they should always be considered before making a purchase. So when buying Silver Eagles, just make sure to shop around for the lowest premium.

There are also several other government- and privately-minted?silver bullion?coins available on the market that also make for great investment coins. Here are a few:

But these prices are really based on the rarity of the grading. Numismatic Guaranty Corp., one of the most respected third-party coin graders, has only 14 2002 Silver Eagles graded at MS 70. This represents 0.0001% of all Silver Eagles minted that year. The NGC registry only includes sixteen 2001 Eagles graded MS 70.

Source: David Lawrence Rare Coins

So graded coins aren?t the best option for investors, they?re for collectors. Investors would be best served owning uncirculated or almost uncirculated silver bullion coins that were minted by a government or reputable private-minter.

Bullion coins, like the American Silver Eagle and others I?ve mentioned here today, offer investors direct exposure to volatility in the silver market, and can provides the comfort of knowing you can instantly sell it for cash or barter.

Gaborik's trick leads Team Chara to All-Star win (AP)

OTTAWA ? Marian Gaborik made New York Rangers teammate Henrik Lundqvist pay for not selecting him to play for Daniel Alfredsson's team in the NHL All-Star game.

Gaborik beat Lundqvist twice in the first period, finished with three goals and an assist, and earned MVP honors in leading Team Chara to a 12-9 win over Team Alfredsson on Sunday.

Tim Thomas made 18 saves in the final period, and extended his record by winning his fourth All-Star game.

Chara, with the eventual winning goal, Marian Hossa and Corey Perry broke the game open by scoring three times in a span of 1:22 that put their club ahead 11-8 with 6:34 remaining.

Despite the loss, Alfredsson rewarded his hometown fans by leading his team with two goals and an assist. The Senators captain also hinted afterward that he is considering coming back for one more season.

In an interview broadcast on the arena's scoreboard, Alfredsson was asked about his future.

With a smile on his face, and fans cheering his name, Alfredsson said: "Fifty percent yes, and my wife's going to have to decide the other 50."

Henrik Sedin had a goal and two assists for Team Alfredsson.

Gaborik became the 16th player to score at least three goals ? one short of matching the record ? in the All-Star game, and first since Rick Nash had three in 2008.

The outcome was decided in the final period, in which Team Chara outscored Team Alfredsson 6-3.

Hossa broke an 8-8 tie by scoring on a partial breakaway after being set up by Pavel Datsyuk with 7:56 left. Settling the puck, Hossa stopped in front and then backhanded a shot past Brian Elliott.

Chara gave his club a 10-8 lead when Gaborik fed him a perfect pass into the middle for a snap shot past Elliott.

For Team Chara, Hossa and Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists, and Joffrey Lupul scored twice.

Daniel Sedin, John Tavares, Jason Pominville and Milan Michalek had a goal and assist each for Team Alfredsson.

Team Chara got off to a fast start, building a 3-0 lead on Gaborik's second goal 9:51 in. The club was so dominant that it was leading 2-0 before Alfredsson's team got off its first shot.

Gaborik certainly enjoyed getting the best of Lundqvist. After scoring his first goal on a give-and-go with Datsyuk, Gaborik circled the net dropped to one knee and pointed his stick at Lundqvist while pumping his fist.

Lundqvist jokingly lamented about being beaten three times on eight shots, including twice by his Rangers teammate.

"There's been a lot of trash talk, but it feels like it's game over already," said Lundqvist, who was wearing a microphone during the opening period.

Lundqvist was Alfredsson's assistant captain, and had a hand in the team's drafting philosophy on Thursday.

Team Alfredsson rallied to tie the game at 3 before the first period was over. But they didn't get their first ? and only lead ? until Alfredsson scored twice during a 1:31 span to put his team up 6-5 with just under four minutes left in the second.

His first goal came on a great individual effort in which Alfredsson, dragging the puck behind him, split defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Ryan Suter, and flipped a shot that sneaked inside the right post to beat goalie Carey Price.

Alfredsson's second goal came on a wonderful passing play courtesy of Daniel and Henrik Sedin, whom Alfredsson was looking forward to play with when he drafted the twins. Henrik Sedin drove up the left wing, fed a pass through the crease to his twin brother, who then redirected to the high slot, where Alfredsson slapped it home.

Price allowed three goals on 14 shots, and had lamented the All-Star game's lack of defense during the first intermission.

"I feel like being a lamb getting led to slaughter," Price said. "I'm must be holding on for the ride today and hope I don't get lit up too bad."

Alfredsson nearly had a third goal nine minutes into third period, when he one-timed a shot off the left post

The game was missing the NHL's most high-profile stars in Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. Crosby has been limited to playing just eight games this season as a result of a concussion, and has also been diagnosed with a neck injury, making it unclear when or if he will play at all this season.

Ovechkin backed out last week after the NHL suspended him three games for an illegal hit.

The game featured 17 first-time All-Stars, 10 playing on Team Alfredsson. Team Chara's roster had the edge over Team Alfredsson in combined games played (10,227-8,425, not including goalies), career goals (2,850-2,286) and career points (7,394-6,164).

Steven Stamkos was awarded a penalty shot with 3:27 left in the first period after he was tripped up by Dion Phaneuf.

On the penalty shot, Stamkos ? who leads the NHL with 32 goals ? attempted the same spin-around move he used to beat Price in the skills competition on Saturday night. Howard didn't bite on Sunday, holding his ground and hugging the post to stop Stamkos' attempt.

It was the second penalty shot taken in an All-Star game. The other was last year in at Raleigh, N.C., when Colorado's Matt Duchene was stopped by Lundqvist.

Fire badly damages 19th century church in Ukraine (AP)

KIEV, Ukraine ? Emergency officials say a fire has badly damaged a 19th-century Orthodox church in southern Ukraine, including collapsing its dome.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire at the landmark Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in the town of Bolhrad outside the Black Sea port of Odessa broke out Thursday during renovation work, the Emergency Situations Ministry said on its website.

The church's dome collapsed before the fire was put out.

Officials say the fire could have been caused by a violation of safety rules during the renovation.
